Saturday, November 26-Fish Canyon- Description: This is about 10 miles RT. We will begin on a dirt road, then head off on a single track to an area called Piano Box. Today the road is closed to traffic due to the Arroyo Toad, Red and Yellow Legged frogs. Without highway maintenance, the forces of Mother Nature are taking the area back. There are HUGE pot holes in the road we will hike. The river has begun to flow over the road, and bridges have sunk. There will be 24 water crossings by the time we reach our destination. Plan on getting wet and cold. Wear OLD shoes that you don’t mind getting wet, or water hiking shoes. The shoes you wear should have tread to stabilize you while river crossing. If you have hiking POLES, please bring them. They will be very helpful. Wildlife is plentiful in the area. You may see bear, deer, cougar, and smaller creatures. In the summer, there are a lot of snakes. You will not see any on this winter trip. Bring a change of shoes and socks for the trip home, and possibly warm pants/sweats. Meet at Towsley Canyon in front of the front gate at 8:00 AM for an 8:15 carpool departure, or meet at the Trail Head at 8:45 AM. BRING: Change of shoes and socks, extra warm pants, lunch, snacks, lots of water, hiking stick/poles, gatorade or some other type of drink/gel/candy that has electrolytes, a good attitude, and a camera! WEAR: OLD SHOES with tread, long hiking pants as parts of the trail are overgrown (denim is not a preferred fabric for this trip as it gets wet and heavy and will not dry out), layered clothing (light wicking shirt, fleece jacket, warmer over-jacket). YOU WILL GET WET. DIRECTIONS: (note: it will take ½ hour to get to the Trail Head from Valencia. Plan ahead to be on time) Take I-5 NORTH to Templin Hwy. (Be in the right lane, or you will miss the exit.) Exit. Turn right. Take this road as far as you can to a white fence that blocks the road. This is the road closure where we will begin the hike. Please be on time. We leave ON TIME, and you will never find us as there are multiple canyons in this area. (NOTE: There is a stop sign that everyone tends to miss, and the county sheriff loves to give tickets here. For the same reason, obey the speed limit….plus, it is dangerous and windy, so be careful driving). LEADER: DIANNE/RATED: MODERATE
