On May 25, 2014 at 2:30 P.M. the Masonic Philosophical Society will be hosting a study group at the Santa Cruz Masonic Lodge. In each Meetup a different topic, ranging from philosophy and science to religion and metaphysics, is discussed, debated and related to the principles of Freemasonry.
May's topic will be conducted by Brother Kris Wilson-Slack on how ancient Greek philosophers impacted Judaism, early Christianity, and Freemasonry. A discussion and debate by all members of the study group will follow a short lecture.
There are many elements of the Christian faith that can be found across Judaism, Greek mystery schools such as the cult of Mithras, and Ancient Greek Philosophy, such as that of Philo and Plotinus. Did the scholarly discussion of these various forms of philosophy and religion bring about the concepts of Christianity or did that religion develop on its own, away from these external influences? How do the ancient Greek philosophers manifest themselves throughout the religion and what does that mean for us today? Did and do these concepts have an effect on Freemasonry and how it has developed? How does the Freemason sort out the various symbolism found in all these religious concepts to form an ethical view?
This group for men and women, which is open to the public, is where non-members can learn more about Freemasonry, as well as meet local Freemasons.
