What we're about

This group is for people looking to build friendships in the Santa Cruz area. All are welcome.

We have a weekly meetup at a local coffee shop -- this is a low-stakes opportunity to get to know one another, find mutual interests, and develop ideas for other Meetup events. I strive to make our other events low/no-cost, local to the Santa Cruz area, and outside in well-ventilated areas.

Meetup’s slogan used to be: “Use the Internet to get off the Internet”, and I want this group to provide space for people to connect with one another and find ways to enjoy spending time together. In my experience, Santa Cruz is a small town with a big heart. But living here can also feel very transient: students graduate from school, people move away, etc. Whether you’re in town for 6 weeks or 60 years, you should be able to make some friends while you’re here!

Thanks! Can’t wait to meet you, Emily (Organizer)

How did this group start? The group’s original organizer (Melodi) learned from Meetup that there are a lot of people in the local community interested in groups about “Friendship and Social Anxiety”. As someone who wanted to broaden her friendship group and who had Generalized Anxiety Disorder herself, Melodi started this Meetup. The group grew into an “amazing community of support, empathy, and human connection”.

After March 2020 and the onset of the pandemic/lockdowns/quarantine, however, the group’s in-person energy fizzled. Emily has jumped in as the current organizer in September 2021, hoping to rekindle some of the original group’s spark.

Meeting Up in the Time of COVID: I want people to feel comfortable attending our events, and as a community we need to respect each other. For now, I am prioritizing activities that can take place outdoors in well-ventilated spaces (with public indoor spaces to use restrooms/wash hands). Please don’t attend events if you are feeling sick.
