The Original West L.A. Fantasy and Sci-Fi Writers Collective Pages

Hello everyone!

My name is Kate, and I am the lead organizer of the Original West L.A. Fantasy and Sci-Fi Writers Collective. We are a primarily critique-focused genre writing group based on the West Side of LA, though we are in the process of integrating free-writes and social sessions. Our goal is to provide critique and support for experienced and aspiring genre writers who may be frustrated by other groups who don't understand or are not interested in the SF/F genres. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

We try to create an open and safe place for our writers. As such we have a few community rules:

1. Be kind and constructive. The nature of critique is to provide feedback -- both positive and negative. Negative feedback is important, but it must be constructive. We ask our members to remembers that we writers are sensitive types and to consider that as you offer your critique.

2. Be gracious. When your baby is getting bruised, it can be hard to smile. Critique can be upsetting. But we ask members to remember we're all in it together and nothing is meant maliciously.

3. Come to us with problems and concerns -- privately. If you are having trouble with another member of the group, and attempts to address it with that person have been unsuccessful, please come to me or to one of the assistant organizers OFF LIST. Do not "reply all" or address the issues in public forum.

4. Absolutely no solicitations on list. We are here to support each other, and sometimes that includes being aware of book events, self-publication efforts, etc. We will have a page in the discussions forum that will allow you to post this, and you can keep us apprised via your profile, but we ask that you not solicit to the email list.

5. Pay your member dues. Unfortunately, it can get rather expensive to run Meetup groups. As such, I have to ask each member to pay annual dues of $15. New members should pay their dues before or at the time of your SECOND event (whether critique, writing session, etc.).

6. Private message me your email address. If you are going to participate in our critiques, it is vital that I have your regular email address. This is how we share and receive submissions in advance of the session. If I do not have it by the Sunday before the group, I will have to change your RSVP to allow others to join. You only need to send it to me once.
