Let me start by borrowing a few lines from Wikipedia.
He described the masses as irrational and subject to herd instinct--and outlined how skilled practitioners could use crowd psychology and psychoanalysis to control them in desirable ways.
The 'He' I am referring to is Edward Bernays, the author of the book, Propaganda, the guy who coined the term 'public relations', and also the nephew of Sigmund Freud.
This topic was inspired by watching 'Deadwood', the movie, a conclusion to a short lived western series on HBO. One of the characters portrayed alongside Wild Bill and Calamity Jane was a fellow by the name of George Hearst, the father of William Randolph. I was inspired to do a little research into this less than honorable pair. They were the predecessors to Edward Bernays, perhaps inspiring him to refine their tactics. The term 'yellow journalism' originated in the mid-1890's, and is in response to the Hearst's awareness of how easy it was to manipulate the public with his near monopoly of newspapers.
William Randolph may have opened the door, while Edward Bernays perfected it. However, today's puppeteers have truly made a science of it. With the advent of television, and then the internet, never before has so much power been placed in the hands of so few. I find it terribly ironic that so many were incensed over the accusations off meddling by the Russian's. This has literally been the story that just wouldn't go away for more than two years, and sadly, even though it may be true, pales in comparison to what's happening in our own back yard. We have no less despicable people than Bernays and the Hearst's virtually in control of our culture and society with nary a word of complaint, or even worse, a
minute awareness of their machinations.
I'll leave you with a quote from the thought-provoking film, The Matrix.
"The Matrix is everywhere. It is all around us. Even now, in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window or when you go to work...when you go to church...when you pay your taxes. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.
That you are a slave, Neo. Like everyone else, you were born into bondage. Into a prison that you cannot taste or see or touch. A prison for your mind."
As always, I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
See you there.
