IN HONOR OF THE MYTHBUSTERS' SERIES FINALE MARCH 5, we'll bust out of our comfortable Verdugos-Griffith Park-San Gabriels enclave and head West to Simi Valley. Trivia note: they've had almost as many episodes (248) as we've had hikes (285).

This perfectly-designed and justifiably-popular trail packs in impressive variety in seven miles: urban and rural vistas, a few challenging uphill sections interspersed with a long meadow stroll, and a landscape dotted with pretty sandstone boulders, live oaks and a lake. With temperatures forecast in the mid-70s, we should be comfortable for this wide-open route.

The hike starts with a ~ 1-1/2 mile uphill (gaining about 900 ft.) before a short downhill to reach China Flat. We’ll catch our breath while taking in the vistas of the peaceful China Flat meadow loop. Well rested from that stroll, we’ll then make the final push to Simi Peak (2,403 ft.), and take a snack break while enjoying the views of the Santa Susanas to the north, Mt. Baldy, San Gorgonio and San Jacinto to the east, and Catalina and possibly a few of the Channel Islands to the west.
