26701 Verdugo Street, San Juan Capistrano, CA
Description: The ride is roughly 8.5 miles each way on fairly flat bike paths. We'll meet at the Train Station, ride through the charming and historic Rio District and get on the San Juan Creek Trail to the south end of Dana Point where we'll stop to stretch, refresh, take pictures. Then we'll ride through Doheny State Beach past the campers and continue south next to PCH where we can enjoy a lovely ocean view as we ride. We'll get onto the San Clemente Beach Trail which we share with human and canine pedestrians. Please keep in mind that they have the right of way. The SCB trail has a layer of sand on it; we will ride at about 7 mph. will follow the rules of the road, ie, when the sign says "Walk your Bikes", we will do so. We'll have lunch at La Galette Cafe across from the pier about 1:30pm. They only accept cash, but the reviews are very good and the meals are light. Here is the review and menu from Yelp:
On the way back there are a few sections where we will ride in a bike lane next to PCH. There will be two intersections which I plan to cross in the crosswalks as directed by the signs
We'll be back in SJC about 3-3:30pm; in time to enjoy the Christmas festivities in San Juan Capistrano. There are usually carolers, local street musicians, the Christmas tree lighting ceremony and a nativity play that includes some actors who have disabilities. The play is very heartwarming... one of my favorite events. If anyone is in the mood to listen to a live band, we can pop into the Swallow Inn for a while.
Optional: Christmas at the Mission. Please check out this event. I peaked into the mission grounds last year and it seemed like a wonderful event. Here's the link: http://www.missionsjc.com/events-venue/signature-events/christmas-at-the-mission/#EventInfo. I can't go but maybe some of you will want to go.
NOTE: Riders must be able to ride at about 10-12 mph on flat land. We ride to have each other's company, so the group stays together, even if it means we take a little longer to get there. The end time is an estimate. The actual time will vary depending on the speed of the group as a whole. I am looking for someone to do the "sweep"... Any volunteers?

Route: Meet at the end of Verdugo Street, where the R/R crossing gate is. Take the bike trail to the ocean. Then go south along PCH to San Clemente Pier. The return will be the same route. If you prefer, you can take the train from the pier back to the San Juan Capistrano train station, however, I will be riding my bike back.
What to bring:
1. You must have your own bike. Mountain bikes are OK, but beach-cruisers are not. A bike with at least 9 gears would be best.
2. Each rider will carry their own provisions including 1-2 liters of something with electrolytes.
3. Bring helmet, sunscreen, sunglasses, bike lock, spare inner tube, riding gloves some bike tools.
4. Bring $15-20 in cash. La Galette only accepts cash.
5. Most importantly: Bring a fun attitude and be flexible. Follow bicycle etiquette and rules of the road. Ride at your own risk!
