as in kayaking the scenic rivers, lakes and coastal routes of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Maine . . .
This kayak group is for fun, active people, ages thirty-five and older, interested in meeting people with similar interests to kayak with. Our paddle events range from advanced beginner, Intermediate to Advanced, with paddle distances averaging about 6- 8 miles (at an average paddle speed of 2-3 miles per hour).
Our plan is to schedule a kayak meet-up every week (weather permitting) during the kayak season, and in the summer months to include some extra kayak events on Fridays(or a week day) as well. Kayak season is from May to October.
Note: Since most of our paddle trips average 8 miles, we require members to have(or rent) a Kayak having a minimum length of 10 feet or longer, and no inflatable kayaks or sit-on-top or peddling kayaks allowed.
Note: Due to Covid-19 we have noticed our events are quickly filling up. As such to keep our group a manageable size, we may need to temporarily put a “pause” on processing new member requests. We evaluate membership requests based on the group’s needs (as our events fill up quickly, as our priority is for our members to have a better chance of signing up for our events), and we add on new members as members leave.
Only those with a clear, updated photo showing their face (no sunglasses, hat, ski goggles, too far in the distance, other people in the photo, or photo too dark) will be approved to join the group. This is so we will recognize you at the meetup events, and, show(unhide) your meet up interests and groups (click on “unhide your interests and groups from others” in your Profiles section).
Per club policy, no pets allowed, and no guests please. Have your guest join the meet-up group (and be approved ) so that they can agree to the liability release and attend an event.
Where we paddle: The meetup locations will primarily be within a two hour driving range (North/South/East/West) from the vicinity of the Boston area.
Kayak Gear: We recommend you bring your own kayak and related gear, as most of our paddle events do not have kayak rentals on site). You can also rent a Kayak for the day (from EMS or Charles River Canoe and Kayak). Wearing a Coast guard approved PFD on all kayak events is required. No sit-on-top or inflatable kayaks allowed.
Kayak Instruction and Classes: Are you interested in Kayak safety and skills training? Check out our list of instructor(s) that are offering kayak instruction and safety training (and have been recommended by some of our members). This information can be found (using a desktop computer) in the "More" section, click on "Message Boards", then hover your mouse over "Message Board" then click on "Pages" and scroll down to Kayak instruction and classes referrals ).
Meet-up costs: We do not charge member fees, nor do we have sponsors (yet) who help pay the organizer’s meetup’s annual fee (which runs about $189 plus tax a year). However, if members would like to help contribute towards the cost of the organizers annual fee to meetup.com, we will cheerfully accept voluntary donations (cash or credit card via Wepay). To find the Wepay button click on this link https://secure.meetup.com/Scenic-Kayaking-Meetup/contribute/
Membership Perks: As a way of saying Thank You to those members who donate $10 or more for the kayak season, we are offering the following perks: If an event is full, whoever’s first on the wait list who has made a seasonal donation of $10 or more, gets automatically moved up to the RSVP list. With a maximum of 2 donors per event getting to move ahead (Applicable up to 48 hours before the event date). This perk is valid for each and every event throughout the season (Kayak season runs from May to October). Scenic Kayaker fundraiser events; donors event fee is waived. PLEASE DO NOT DISCUSS POLITICS as we have members with all kinds of strong opinions - this is not the place for that. Be courteous to everyone and the Organizers who take the effort to list events.
The safe operation of recreational boats is permitted under the following guidelines: - Persons shall practice strict social distancing when unloading, loading and launching kayaks. - All recreational crafts shall remain a safe distance apart. - Masks and face coverings are to be worn (Until you are on the water).
-In order to observe social distancing rules at scenic kayak events, a member must have the strength to get in and out of their kayaks unassisted when launching from, or putting in on dry land.
-Unless you are paddling with someone you live with, please plan on being able to unload your kayak from your car and get it to the water on your own (or plan to provide your helper with hand sanitizer with continuous reminder for him/her to not touch his/her face).
Generally, everyone is responsible for carrying /portaging their own kayak to and from the water (unless other people offer to help). Note; its not fair to expect people to randomly help.
Entire inactivity of more than 1 year (not even visiting our page once a year sitting at home...!) may lead to exclusion of your membership.
We are also open to any kayak meetup ideas that you might be interested in. We look forward to having fun and meeting you all!
