New Meetup: Philosophy of Science with Donald Farrer

From: Justin S.
Sent on: Monday, September 21, 2009 2:48 PM
Announcing a new Meetup for The San Antonio Science Caf?!

What: Philosophy of Science

When: October 6,[masked]:00 PM

Where: (A location has not been chosen yet.)

What comes to mind when you hear that someone is a "scientist"? Does it mean the same thing today that it meant 100 years ago, even 50 years ago? How do certain people get left in charge of discovering the nature of, well, nature?

If you love to learn about the latest technological applications and are excited by discoveries of extrasolar lava planets, then stop for a minute to consider what it is that makes us wonder, and how we can best go about the process of "classifying and measuring nature". You may be surprised by the degree to which bias and method affect scientists and the scientific process.

ENTER Donald Farrer.

[[Gong]]

Dr. Don Farrer is semi-retired, not-nearly-expired, highly inspired eternal student of psychology and a brilliant scientist to boot. Dr. Farrer brings many questions (and hopefully, some answers) about science itself, and he will get the crowd buzzing with a near feverish excitement as he hands down pearls of wisdom. Come on out and open your mind, share your perspective, and share the company of your fellow San Antonio science lovers at the next SA Science Cafe.

Topics:
The Philosophy of Science: ?Absolute Truth vs. Hypotheses?
Early Space Exploration: The data used to justify the first Astronaut space flights?
Rocket Science: Is it ?Science? (Presented by a non ?Rocket Scientist?)

Location is TBD, but probably will be Bluestar Brewery or Lion and Rose.

Please invite your friends and RSVP as soon as possible, as seating is limited to 30 people.

See you soon!
