Summer Kickoff Picnic! Sunday at the Cove...Diving / BBQ / Music by Rockola

It's that time of year again! Diving, barbecuing, and just kicking back listening to music. A perfect way to end the 4th of July weekend festivities!

Come join us for the kick off of the Summer 2013 season of La Jolla Concerts By The Sea. This is a fun and free event. Rockola is one of the most popular bands to play at the Cove each summer. This is the one you don't want to miss!

This is a morning AND afternoon event.

Come for one or both.

Summertime in San Diego is bursting at the seams with fun things to do. One of the best free things to do in San Diego is to enjoy a day at La Jolla Cove: diving, snorkeling, grilling, and listening to music. The tourists that have traveled hundreds or even thousands of miles to visit La Jolla will tell you, with envy, that we're very fortunate to have the Cove in our own backyard. Come join us at the Cove this Sunday for some diving, grilling, and just relaxing on the grass listening to music put on by La Jolla Concerts By The Sea. The performers this Sunday will be Rockola (Classic Rock). These guys have been playing around San Diego for many years, and are always one of the bigger draws of the summer lineup at La Jolla.

LOOSE AGENDA: We'll dive in the morning, then fire up the grill for a while after our dives, then listen to the music from 2-4pm.  But that's just my agenda. If you want to arrive later, and do a few dives in the afternoon while the music is playing, that works too.

WHERE: La Jolla Cove - we'll be on the large grass area, next to the sidewalk along Coast Blvd. (not the small grass area in front of the restrooms where divers typically gear up). Look for canopies with Power Scuba signs.

IN-WATER TIME: That's up to you! You don't have to be there at 7:30 am if you're a late sleeper. We'll be there all day. You and your buddy can choose the dive time (keep in mind the best dive conditions are generally in the morning). If you show up solo (no dive buddy), no problem, there is usually somebody you can buddy up with, especially if you show up in the morning with the main group of divers. However, if you do plan on showing up later, I recommend posting a message below to connect with other divers that may also be showing up later. Likewise, if you need/want to be in the water real early, then post a message below in the event discussion section to connect with other like-minded divers.

Bring a second tank in the event the conditions are great!

PARKING: Parking at the Cove can be a pain.  The good news is that there is no 3-hour time limit on parking spaces on Sundays (like there is Mon thru Sat). In general, the earlier you arrive, the better. Also, patience pays off. If you are willing to pull your car over to the side and wait a bit, a car will usually pull out of a spot within a few minutes or so. Also, yellow curbs (commercial loading zones) are OK to park along on Sundays. If you just can't find parking, drop your gear off at the curb near us then go find parking further away from the Cove. There are several all-day pay parking lots near the Cove, if you don't want to walk very far.

THINGS TO BRING:

  • FOOD - If you are able to, bring something to snack on, or a side dish, or something to throw on the grill (we'll generally have a portable gas grill available). If you are unable to bring something, please don't let that keep you away! Through the generosity and spirit of our members, we generally end up with plenty of food for all.
  • PICNIC SUPPLIES - If you are not able to bring food, consider bringing picnic supplies. Cups, napkins, paper plates, utensils, etc., all are used during these events. It never hurts to have extra...we'll just hang on to them and roll-em over to the next event.
  • POP-UP CANOPY - If you have a pop-up canopy, please bring it! We can really use it! On sunny days, the shade provided by canopies is in high demand.
  • PORTABLE TABLE AND CHAIRS - if you have a portable fold-up table, please bring it! Extra lawn chairs? Bring 'em! We've learned over time that you just can't have too many tables and chairs...tables especially!  You just can't have too much table space at a BBQ.
  • PORTABLE GRILL - Do you have a portable grill?  Please bring it!  Although we'll have a portable grill, having a second one really comes in handy. If you plan on bringing one, please state so in the discussion section below. One or two extra is all we need.
  • ICE CHEST - An ice chest with ice and a some extra room generally comes in handy. Beverages to share will be appreciated as well.
  • TOWELS, BLANKETS, HATS, SUNSCREEN, ETC. - don't forget the towels, hats, and sunscreen! It's very easy to pick up a nasty sunburn when you're spending a day of fun at the Cove. Hours go by and you can have a nice burn before you even know it.
  • FRIENDS AND FAMILY - Feel free to bring non-diving friends and family members. Spending the day at La Jolla Cove and enjoying the free concert is a day of fun that can be enjoyed by everyone...not just divers!
  • COURTESY! - Yes, that's right...bring your courtesy. For example, if you did not bring a chair, or a canopy, please ask if you can use that which belongs to someone else. It's simply good manners. The one exception is the community food table.  If you brought something for everyone to share, place it on the food table. If you have something that is not for sharing with everyone, keep it in your cooler away from the community food table. So, if you see something on the community food table, please help yourself!  If you find something you'd like away from the food table, assume it's best to ask before taking.

So what's the deal with diving at the Cove?
The Good: In the opinion of many seasoned local divers, the Cove is the best shore dive in the county. It's got it all: shallow rocky reefs, kelp forests, caverns and swim-throughs, barren sandy bottom, and (if you're up for a somewhat longer surface swim) a gorgeous deep wall dive. There is no other shore dive that will allow you to experience such a wide variety on one dive. Best of all, you have the chance at the Cove to see a wide variety of large marine life: Giant Sea Bass, Sevengill sharks, Tope sharks, leopard sharks, bat rays, schools of barracuda, harbor seals, and sea lions...all on the same dive. A pod of dolphins might swim by as you kick out to the buoy. We even encountered an 8+ foot mola mola near Buoy A! You might even run into a Mongolian warrior.  ;-)

The Bad: When conditions are sub-par...and that happens a lot...the Cove is a tedious place to dive. Poor viz, annoying surge, and a mean shore break that can roll you in the sand (and over boulders if you're not paying attention). All of that right before you have to trudge up two flights of steps. Yes, on bad days that the Cove can test the mettle of even the hardiest of divers.

The Verdict: The Cove can be a spectacular shore dive. But we can't stress enough how important it is to assess the conditions before entering the water. Entry is typically not difficult, it's the exit that gets you. When the entry/exit zone is flat as a pond...as it can be at times...then it's just a matter of negotiating a submerged "sand step". On the other hand, there are times when large sets come rolling in. That's when you need to be on your game, and timing can make or break your day (or other things, unfortunately). So take a good look at the pattern of sets coming in. Watch other divers exiting the water. Then judge for yourself if you'll be comfortable exiting the water under those conditions. (Tip: fins that you can quickly/easily don and doff are a huge asset at the Cove)

If you have never dived at the Cove before, or you just want more info about the Cove and which direction to go, feel free to ask the event host (or another seasoned Cove diver) for a dive site briefing.

We hope to see you there!!

ADMIN STUFF YOU MUST READ:

The Virtual Donation Jar will be out (for the Meetup site costs and general fund). It's strictly voluntary, but is very much appreciated and needed: Click here for the DONATION JAR

If you have not submitted a Liability Release for Power Scuba Meetup, please follow this link to the file, print, sign and bring to the event, along with your C-Card (scuba certification card). You only need to do this once a year:  Liability Release and Assumption of Risk

You must also read this: Disclaimer and Clarification... AKA Terms and Conditions

Anyone with a medical condition possibly counter-indicitive to diving must have a doctors signature on a diving waiver form and submit signed form to Bill Powers (or an organizer) before they may attend any Power Scuba event. YOU MAY NOT ATTEND AN EVENT WITH AN UNDISCLOSED MEDICAL CONDITION. Doing so is grounds for expulsion from the group. Here is our Medical Statement. Therein you'll find a Doctor Waiver form as well.

Attending any scuba event Power Scuba facilitates constitutes attendee's affirmation they are medically fit to dive, certified to dive by a nationally-recognized agency, have the necessary skill & training level for the dive being offered, have read the Terms and Conditions, and have submitted a signed Liability Release to an organizer.

Important Note: It is not the organizer's role to lead your dive (or to wait for you after you come out of the water). He/she merely facilitates you getting to the pre-dive meeting location. The Organizer will not assign you a buddy nor will he/she be leading the dive as a "group dive". Visibility and liability do not allow for that. Nor will the Organizer tell you whether you are skilled enough to make any particular dive. That is for you (only) to decide. When you enter the water, you (and your buddy) are on your own. You must plan and execute your dive with your dive buddy only. Once members arrive at the meeting spot, the Organizer becomes simply another diver.

Power Scuba bears no responsibility or liability for a member's loss (gas, airfare, hotel fees, etc) in the event of a cancelled event.

Your participation constitutes your affirmation you agree to these above rules and disclaimers.... and that your buddy(s) (if applicable) has read and agrees to the same.

Great day of diving at the cove today. It's always cool to see the Giant Black Sea Bass. Not to mention a Lobster that went about 7lbs.
