For New and/or Inexperienced Divers Only! We want you!

  • Apr 13, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

* New and/or inexperienced divers only RSVP on this page *

Make sure you bring your cert card!

Free and open to the entire dive community!

Everyone bring a small side dish to add to our food fest.

STARBUCKS is providing the coffee! Thanks, Seattle's best!

This is an absolute "No-Flake" event.

BAR-B-Q after the dive! Power Scuba is bringing some meat for the grill. You bring a side to share and a beverage.

You've got your cert card, you know your skills, but maybe you've been out of the water for a few months. Maybe San Diego diving is new to you. Maybe you're a brand new diver. Wouldn't it be great to be paired up with a strong, experienced diver who can share his/her knowledge and suggestions with you? Someone to go under with you who has a watchful eye? Someone you KNOW won't abandon or ignore you?

That is precisely what this event is offering! Experienced divers who know their stuff... ready and willing to be your partner! No more excuses... time to get in the water. Spring is here!

There will be a pool of experienced divers waiting to buddy up with you! Get there early to have time for talking and meeting others.

The following dive shops/instructors have agreed to send experienced staff to supplement our pool of talent. Big thanks to:

  • Dive Shack (El Cajon)
  • Ocean Enterprises (Kearny Mesa)
  • Unified Team Diving (Sorrento Valley)

GEAR: You will need all your own gear. Rentals are available at most of the local dive stores listed here: Dive Stores. But DON'T wait until that morning to attempt a rental. You'll be disappointed.

CAVEAT: This will not be a "Scuba Review Class" or anything similar... just one diver helping another. If you need a Review class then PLEASE take a Review class at a local shop! As a matter of fact, some area dive shops are doing a lead-up promo to this event. They're offering STEEPLY discounted Tuneup classes. Way cheap! ...NOW what's you're excuse?

Bring your cert card. No card, no dive!

Don't RSVP "Yes" here unless you mean it. (Don't take a spot away from somebody else if you're not serious about attending.)

Get there early because parking can indeed suck! You may leave your extra gear on the grass while you dive. There will be dozens of divers around as well as our event support crew. (Though Power Scuba and its staff accept no responibility for the same.)

There will be no professional or teaching relationship between divers... either real or implied. The organizers are not "leading" this event... rather they are facilitating the meeting of the listed divers in order to maximize comfort levels and enjoyment of the dive.

"Getting out there and meeting dive buddies is one of the more intimidating parts of being a new diver." -Power Scuba member

I was really glad to see you all out there on Saturday. Hopefully you learned something about yourself and what steps you need to take next. Remember my assertion to you: O/w class was not the end of your training, but truly the beginning. Those of you who identified things about your diving that needed improving/addressing: Good on you. Self-assessment is KEY to this sport. Don't hesitate to contact me if you've any questions. I look forward to seeing you all more this year! (And hey, if you maintain contact with your buddy, you may have just found a new friend and diving partner!)

    Great reintroduction to diving!
Thanks to Janyl and the rest of my kingsguard to keep me from losing my fins, playing yo-yo, getting lost, or otherwise worshipping the Drowned God.

Well done, Bill. We certainly need more events such as these and I'm really glad to hear of the fantastic turn out! Hopefully next time I wont be on military duty and will be able to get out there with you all!

This was a great event! Thank you Bill for organizing. Thank you dive buddy Raleigh for a great dive. Maybe next year I will have enough experience to be one of the solid divers helping the newbies :-)

This was a great idea Bill. Thanks for putting it together. First dive after certification and needed the extra support. My buddy was very patient.

Hey I have a good bit of experience but only one dive in San Diego. Looking forward to getting wet and meeting some folks. I'll bring 2 tanks just in case anyone wants to go out again.

No doubt you're all getting your gear ready to go (or arranging to rent). Don't wait until the last minute. Prior planning will give you that comfortable feeling that ensures you have a good time on Saturday and get the most out of your diving experience.

This event is sizing up to be very exciting. Already, great buzz is circulating within the community about it. We're really happy to have you all join us on Saturday. Review all the info on the event page and contact me if you've any further questions. See you soon!

I see a "Julie H" on the RSVPs. Is that her? Yes, we would cancel in the event of high surf or bad reported conditions. I'm not seeing anything bad predicted for Sat. I'll keep an eye on it as we get closer.

So excited first dive after being certified

    3 · April 9, 2013

  • Bill P.

"Newbies", I'm really glad you signed up. Let me go over a few things you'll need to know: 1)Please go over your gear configuration well the night before (at least). You don't want to show up at the Shores only to discover you forgot something or a part isn't working. Assemble everything and check it out. Figure out how much weight you'll need. 2)Don't forget your cert card. 3)Bring a small side dish to share. 4)Understand that no training will occur on this dive. This is simply two people getting together as good buddies and pulling a successful dive. 5)Come early if you can. Parking will suck a bit, so drop off your gear and then go find parking. 6)Please do not flake on this event. A lot of work has gone into pulling this event off. Please give this event (and its organizers) the respect being given you. 7)Prepare to have a great time!

    April 8, 2013

    • Bill P.

We have a list of local dive shops in Discussions--> Message Boards--> Important Info. Most all of them rent gear. Contact one or three. See you Sat!

    January 9, 2013

    • Roy T

Pat, I've got a zoop, and just recently found this dive log software. It works with the zoop, as well as many others. http://subsurface.hoh... Subsurface is an open source divelog program that runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. You will need a cable (USB to Zoop)

Should I bring more than one tank?

    April 3, 2013

    • Bill P.

This event is for a one-tank dive, but your buddy may be willing to do a second, especially if conditions are good, so it couldn't hurt to bring an additional tank.

      April 3, 2013

  • Christoph M.

    Ok. No excuses indeed.

    March 26, 2013

Rachel, this event will show you the meaning of "good buddy". Be decently strong in your skills though, before you come... there will be no "training" performed during this event.
