Backyard Maple Sugaring

  • Feb 17, 2013 · 12:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Maple sugaring season is coming! Lauren Winterholer will lead us in this hands-on meetup to learn how to tap your - or your neighbors, with permission! - trees.

We will be outside, so come dressed for the weather. We will discuss the materials needed for tapping, proper processing methods, and what to do at end of the season.

Lauren has created a document going over the items needed and process... see that here: http://www.mudhugger.com/Backyard_Sugaring.pdf. Then come on over to see it in action!

Depending on how many come, this will go for 1-2 hours. Suggested donation: $5 - 15.

I've noticed that the branches around Barrington have pinked up. Does this mean maple season is ending?

Lauren did a great job teaching us about tapping maples and boiling down the sap. The weather was the worst thing about this meetup. Don't know how crazy it is to have this type of meetup right after maple sugaring season, but having it during warmer weather would be ideal. Let's see if nature will accommodate us - joke.

It was so great to meet you and Joey! We are planning to do some stuff this summer and would love to have you guys over again. :) I know you just moved to the area and that can be rough if you don't know many people. Let me know! :)

Thanks for having us! That sounds great and hopefully we can host something when we find a house!

Brr. I'm still chilled from that wind! Despite the wind chill, thank you to everyone that braved the weather to come to this informative Meetup. Lauren, our teacher today, said that she would contact us when she's going to tap her trees, especially if it's better weather than today's when she taps them. Thank you, Lauren and the Goodwin family, for making this Meetup a success.

Arg. I am so sorry guys. My son's eye just starting oozing a bit and it slightly red looking. This just started an hour ago but on the even slight chance he has pink eye I wanted to give those who where here a head's up.
I can't remember the gentleman's name who brought his three year old here. Pregnancy brain. I extra wanted to bring it to your attention ASAP since it is really contagious.
Sorry, I never would have had people over had I known. :(
I will post if it goes away so no one has to worry.

I know, me too!! Super bummed :( We're going to have a hard time getting out of our driveway right now- got 2" yesterday and working on at least 3" today. Hope you guys have fun- stay warm- and hopefully we'll meet soon!

Hey everyone! The snow is supposed to stop around 11:30, so I'd like to push this to 12:30 start (a 1/2 hour delay) in order to give everyone a little more time for driving. Hope this works well for you all!

Okay, so its snowing!! Good news it is only supposed to be 1-3 inches and stop around 11:30am. We are still more than happy to host (we are thrilled to learn too!).
Consider it on unless I post otherwise. I will contact Lauren shortly to make sure she still wants to teach. As long as she does, we are good to go. :)

So sorry... I have a sick child so we won't be able to make it tomorrow:(

    February 16, 2013

  • Michael C.

It's looking like I may not make it tomorrow. I am finishing up my project for my year long PDC and I may need Sunday afternoon to finish. I apologize for the short notice, I figured as long as there was no waiting list I would leave my RSVP as "Yes".

    1 · February 16, 2013

I had a family emergency this week so we will not be able to attend.
I hope the day is fun for everyone. So sorry we will miss it.

Hey guys! Bring your snowshoes if you got them. We have some serious snow to trek through. :)
Also, I will have hot coffee and tea available afterwords so people can warm up.

Do we need to get the supplies needed before this event? Or will supplies be provided or be available to buy once we get there?

    February 13, 2013

    • Lauren W.

and Stacy, if you do decided to tap this year, bascommaple.com is a great, local resource.

      February 13, 2013

  • Lauren W.

Right, the supply list and info is provided as easy reference to start tapping your trees :) Assuming the snow is going to stick around, tall boots or snowshoes are something/s you may want to consider bringing.

    February 13, 2013

  • Amy A

You don't need to bring any supplies... dress for being outdoors, maybe bring notebook and camera if you want. I don't think Lauren will have anything for sale, but she can tell you where to get things. There's not actually that much you have to buy for home-scale sugaring!

me and my 9 year old as long as that is ok.

    February 11, 2013

    • Amy A

Yes, Stacy, your daughter is very welcome! This meetup will be a good one for kids.

      February 11, 2013

  • Stacy

I would love to be able to bring my 9 year old. She was just saying that she wanted to learn to do this... hands on by herself:)

    February 11, 2013

  • Anna K.

I just realized that I cannot make this time...too bad, maybe next time. I am not sure how to remove myself from the list.

    February 2, 2013

  • Amy A

Tony - it's fine to bring your daughter!

    January 28, 2013

  • Tony

+ our * Year Old Daughter if that is OK? She is very attentive and like me, wants to learn EVERYTHING! ;-)

Just realized I still haven't fixed the pdf file-- the supplies link should read http://www.bascommaple.com (not "boscom") Also, another link I don't think listed: http://mapletrader.com/community Thanks!
