Counter-Economics Planning and Networking Session.

One of the hardest criticisms I receive from anyone when I refuse to vote or take any other direct political action is "what are you actively doing to live out your principles and create the world you want to see?" My answers never seem to satisfy. I tell people that not voting is itself an action against the state and that I regularly engage people in philosophical conversation. Yet that doesn't seem to be enough. This has finally inspired me to do more. So during the last meetup I sparked an impromptu discussion about what we all could start doing; and while we came up with some good ideas, I want to come up with more and make sure we keep the momentum going.

So instead of just drinking and talking about how bad the state is I say let’s meet to discuss how we can challenge it. Come with ideas or at the very least the willingness and desire to contribute but not an expectation for a leader to have it all planned out for you. This is anarchy; we are freely associating individuals and do not need a dictator.
Some of the ideas that came up last time were: promoting and trading with Bitcoin, investing in 3D printing and Defense Distributed, investing in Bitcoin ATMs, and creating some sort of network in which we exchange goods and services amongst ourselves using exclusively other forms of currencies. Let us add to and refine these ideas.

Sorry, an unexpected auto repair killed our budget. Have a great time! We'll miss seeing all of you!

Just wanted to see if people would prefer pizza or snacks given Tom's event at the pizza place later that evening

Wow looks like a lot more people are going to join this is great. I just wanted to mention I am considering throwing an impromptu benefit for Bill's Off Broadway on Capitol Hill whose window was the first to be smashed during the May Day protest. Maybe we could have pizza there around 9 or earlier depending on how long our planning session goes? I figure this could be a way to say that we are anarchists and do not condone such pointless destruction.

Tom, there's a home depot on the way back into the city from our house that we could stop at and pick up a brick :) that sounds good, I could put together a couple of snack foods instead of pizza so that way no one's hungry before we go if everyone is in agreement

By the way, for anyone who does not have Bitcoins and wants them, I would like to get you all started. So please bring a laptop or smart phone and cash for whatever amount of Bitcoins you would like to buy. Also, please contact me "privately" before the meetup to discuss how many you would like to purchase. I put "privately" in scare quotes because I don't consider this medium ideal for our purposes... we'll have to discuss that as well.

Our options for a good place for a meeting like this would be greatly increased if we met earlier in the day.

If it has to be Saturday night, if anyone has a common room in an apartment or condo building, those are good. There's a bar on the 2nd floor of the Red Lion hotel in downtown Seattle that used to be great for this kind of thing. It was always empty, even on Fridays and Saturdays. It's been remodeled and might not be the gem of emptiness it used to be, but I'd bet it is, hotel restaurants being what they are. That might be an option.

Elephant and Castle has a room downstairs, and we've met there without any hassle. we had almost 50 people there and no interruptions other than wait staff trying to deliver our orders.

For anyone who is not familiar... here is a link to the audio-book version of Edward Konkin III's New Libertarian Manifesto. http://archive.org/details/SEK3NewLibertarianManifesto It functions as a nice boilerplate or springboard for our discussion.

Also, here's an interesting article about Konkin and the "anarcho-village" he started in Long Beach, CA of all places. http://distributedrepublic.net/archives/2008/01/18/sketch-sek3-founder-agorism

Not sure, but I do know some of us from Seattle have cars... I figure people will just have to speak up. What's your address?

Has anyone heard of Von Trapps? I have really been wanting to check this place out for some time. Looks like they take regular table reservations for up to 10 people and have private rooms for larger groups. I'm not sure how much larger this group will get, but it might be nice to snatch up a private room where we can brainstorm for a couple hours and then break and just hang out at the bar, drink and play bocce! http://www.vontrapps.com/VonTrapps/HOME.html

looks like renting one of these rooms is fairly expensive... It wouldn't be worth it unless we got at least 20 people.
