What instrument(s) do you play? (include voice if you sing!)

Acoustic piano, except when the gig doesn't have one, in which case it's a NORD Electro4-HP, but also play Hammond XK3-c.

What styles of music do you like to play/sing? (i.e., standards, blues, modal, bebop, free jazz, etc.)

I like to play standards (including modal and cycle of fifths). Biggest influences are the post-bop styles of Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Bill Evans, Michel Petrucciani, David Hazeltine, Dave Peck, Eliane Elias, and Andy LaVerne.

What formats do you want to play/sing in? (duo, trio, quartet, quintet, stageband, drop-in jam, hosted jam in public, etc.)

I play piano in jazz trios including the Steve Jones Trio featuring Paul Storz (bs) and Brad Papineau (dr). Adding horns (sax, trumpet) is fun too; I get to lay back and let the horns take the lead. At jam sessions I play piano. I'm hosting vocal jams to get more accompanist chops; it's a lot of fun too.

How much theory can you apply in your playing/singing? (i.e., reharmonization, cycle of fifths, jazz scales/modes, etc.)

I know the jazz scales/chords and modes, most consonant scales, cycle of fifths reharmonization, tritone & diminished chord substitution, and how to get at the underlying structure of a tune from a typical real book chart. I took piano from Seattle's own Dave Peck (Earshot Hall of Fame) and Darin Clendenin.

Do you read music or play by ear only? What kind of music do you read? (i.e., lead sheets/Real Books, written-out, etc.)

I play from lead sheets like the real books, but don't sight-read legit piano music.

I started this group to get out and play more with people. Married, retired early as technologist / entrepreneur in Bellevue, love jazz. Passionate, driven, like organizing groups, looking for fun and growth as a musician.
