SGLRG Weekly News!

From: Loka M.
Sent on: Thursday, August 13, 2015, 1:55 PM

Hey Seattle Green Lake Running Group,
What a beautiful week we are having!  It's so awesome to be a runner in the PNW and having so many places to get out and run right at our finger tips.  I know there are a lot of you out there that take time during your runs to appreciate some of the beauty that we experience on a weekly basis.  Keep those photos coming!  It is fun to see things through the eyes of a runner, whether it is exploring a new city on foot, or just getting to know your own city better through running.  This time of the year is especially fun for those amazing sunrises and sunsets that we get to experience as well.  It is great to remember how fortunate we are.  That balance between healthy and injured can often be just a run away and not taking it for granted is so important.  We lose so many running buddies each month to injury and as you all know it is a big bummer to not have them around for our weekly runs.  Maybe this could be a good time to reach out to an injured running buddy and invite them to go for a walk, bike ride, grab a meal or something fun.  This isn't the easiest group to be a part of when you are injured and any efforts we can make to include them is definitely appreciated.  Below you will find some of the details for upcoming things happening with the SGLRG, so check the expiration date on those shoes and come out and run with us!  Hope to see you out there running!

Field Trip this Weekend! Hey everyone, just a heads up to any marathoners needing to go long this weekend, some of us will be meeting over at Montlake Playfields parking lot on Saturday morning and heading off on a long run at 6am sharp!  Definitely check the Saturday Morning Rise & Shine page for get details posted by John, but there will be a wide range of paces running 16-20 miles along with a 10 and 12 mile option.  There will still be runners meeting at Green Lake like normal, but wanted to make sure you were all aware of the field trip in case you wanted to come along!

SGLRG GOLAZO RUNNER OF THE WEEK! As part of our partnership with Golazo Sports Drinks we will be highlighting a runner of the week based off of the nominations that come in from you all. This weeks SGLRG Golazo Runner of the Week is Karen Pyott and it is very evident that her running buddies appreciate her inspiration, hard work and friendship. She may not be the biggest fan of getting up early to run, but has proven that she willing to do it anyways if it means she can get her run in.  If you have someone in mind for next weeks SGLRG Golazo Runner of the Week, please get those nominations in!

1. How long have you been running and what got you started in the first place?

I've been a 'binge' runner for about 15 years. I struggled to run consistently more than a few months at a time, often taking 'breaks' for months. I ran my first half marathon, the Seattle Half, in 2006. But running cosistantly was always a challenge with twin boys who were born in 2003 :) I did a few sprint triathlons over the past 15 years, but always struggled to run more than 3 miles regularly

2. What have been some of your running highlights that you are most proud of?

Running my first Marathon in 2014 in memory of my dad. I decided last year that I should run a marathon. So I ran the Hot Chocolate 15k in March 2014, the See Jane Run Half in July 2014, then worked up to the Seattle Marathon in Nov 2014. My dad had his first heart attack when he was 42 ... So I decided I should run a Marathon at age 42 in honor of him. I finished the marathon with tears streaming down my face. My dad ultimately had 4 heart attacks before dying age 50, so I guess I have 3 more marathons to run!!

3. How long have you been running with the SGLRG and what do you remember about your first run with the group?

I joined the group last fall-I think in September- when I realized I needed some support & companionship during the long runs. My first run with the group was a Saturday RnS - I remember feeling like I was the sole non-runner amongst a group of Runners. I remember saying to someone ( named Katie?) " I'm not really a Runner, I just decided I should run a marathon"... She replied "if you are running a marathon -you are a Runner!" After that, I realized I actually was finally a Runner!! I was hooked on SGLRG from that point on :)

4. Do you have a running philosophy that you like to follow as a runner?

Slow and steady wins the race :).

5. What do you enjoy most about running?

Meeting new running buddies. And eating whatever I want after long runs without any guilt. Pint of ice cream-sure, why not!

6. What races are on your running bucket list?

All I can think about now is the upcoming Portland Marathon!

7. You are currently training for your second marathon, what have you learned so far from your training and has it taught you anything about yourself?

In hindsight-I barely trained for my first marathon last year. I ran 3x/week & skipped all the cross training days. I crossed the finish line, had an amazing time, but I think I can do better. So this time, I'm following a different plan ( Higdon intermediate 1) and doing my best to actually follow the plan consistently. (Well, I sometimes skip the XT day!) I think one of the hardest parts of marathon training is fighting the mental demons that say "stay in bed, you can skip a day!" So far, I have learned that I can actually fight those mental demons, get out of bed, and run in the morning before work!

8. What is your favorite kind of weather to run in and what would be your ideal route?

Cloudy, even slightly rainy. Spoken like a true Seattlelite! I really like the 17 mile route from last week: 85th to GG, then Burke, thru Locks, along the canal trail and around Lake Union.

9. What is your go to running shoe/model?

Just switched from Brooks Adrenaline to Hoka Conquest 2. I've been battling PF in my left heel. Hoka's are AMAZING!!! Combining the Hoka's with PF compression socks has made My PF almost disappear! I love my Hoka's!!!!!

10. If you could run a lap around Green Lake with anyone, who would you choose and why?

Loka, because he seems pretty funny. But for me to keep up with him- he'd have to run backwards or something.

SGLRG Goes to a Sounders Game! How fun would it be to go to a Sounders game with all your running buddies, friends and family? It would be a ton of fun and Momodou has put in the leg work to get this all set up for us. The match is on August 30th and we are collecting ticket orders on the event page for anyone interested in attending. Best of all the Sounders will be playing their bitter rivals the Portland Timbers so it will be a great atmosphere to watch a soccer match! Get your orders in if you want to sit in our reserved section by August 21st. Tickets will still be available after this date, but no guarantee you will be sitting with your running buddies. Hope to see you all at the pitch!

SGLRG & Girls on the Run! We are excited to forge ahead with our partnership with Girls on the Run of Puget Sound. Our mission is to support and be inspirational role models for young girls to build confidence and encourage healthy lifestyles. Through the hard work of a committee of SGLRG members, we are in the process of adopting a school to support the fall program, planning for a supply drive and assembling a cheer squad for the December 12th 5k which is a culmination if the 10-week program the girls participate in.Please join us for our next meeting of SGLRG supports Girls in the Run on August 20th at the Green Lake Starbucks to learn more and get involved. Please contact Christine McHugh if you have any questions at [address removed]. ~Subbu

This Friday @ FLUR! Next Friday at FLUR, Daniel from Newton Running will be on hand with shoes for anyone interested in learning more about their product and taking them for a test run. Plan on arriving between 5:30-5:45am if you are interested. That way you can learn more about the shoes and put on a pair prior to the 6am start time.

BEAT THE BLERCH AID STATIONS! We have been asked again this year to build a couple of SGLRG aid stations along the course of the Beat the Blerch 10k/half/marathon.  I know our teams that volunteered last year had a blast, so Danielle & Betsy will be actively recruiting again for their tents this year.  If you are available I am sure they would love to have you!  The dates are Saturday, September 12th & Sunday, September 13th.

Saturday Morning Routes...will be posted on the event pages when they are finalized.  Keep any out for them there this week.  Thanks!
