Discuss Scala Akka and Related Technologies

Dennis Sosnoski from New Zealand will be presenting "Building on Akka IO"

akka.io (the package, not the web site) provides basic support for asynchronous actor-based I/O operations. Support is currently limited to UDP and TCP network operations, and even those are still in flux - Akka 2.2.x used a pipeline approach to add protocol layers on top of the basic operations for variations such as SSL, but the pipeline approach has been dropped in 2.3.x. The replacement is likely to use the still-evolving Akka implementation of Reactive Streams.

In this presentation you'll see how the basic TCP support can be used to build scalable network applications in the form of an SMTP client and server. After a quick review of the discarded pipeline approach, you'll also get an update on the current state of the Akka Streams implementation (based on the current development preview release). Finally, you'll see how to work with the preview streams-based HTTP implementation.

Informal networking starts at 6:30 and the talk at 7:00.

How's the parking situation at WhitePages? I'm going to be driving up from the airport area, so would appreciate any suggestions.

Link was actually my first thought, but the hotel I'm at won't take me to/from the airport unless I'm checking in or checking out. That's a shame - I was looking forward to trying Link. It looks like other public transportation options take a long time.

Coming from the suburbs. I'd like suggestions for less expensive parking. The hotels are pricy.

The building is eight dollars for the evening after five. You might find something cheaper at Pacific Place.
