Seattle City Parks has built an entirely brand new kayak launch site into the old South Lake Union Naval Air Facility.
Here is the link to the City of Seattle's site:
There will be a traditional salmon BBQ as well as other community activities associated with this brand new park opening.
This is COOL!
I've got some calls in to the city people who are organizing this event. I'll find out more about the days activities and what kind of opening this will actually be. They promised they will update their flier at the above link with info. Their might be an opportunity to be the first kayakers to use this access, or paddle up to it or something for the opening ceremony. When I find out more I'll post!
This is COOL!
Now that we are starting to get good intell on this new park location, (thanks Roy!) and seeing as how it is located in Seattle after all, I think it's appropriate to know just who would be using this location with or without their skirt!
I got the updates on this thing, there is a new version of the flier out....
All I asked was if we could volunteer to be the first ones to paddle there!
Keep yer skirts on, this event is HUGE!!!
Thanks for your interest! Yes, there are definitely opportunities for volunteers! I am attaching a description of volunteer duties, and if you are interested in any of them, please contact me or Jordan Adams (cc’d on this email) for more information. I’m so glad to hear your group is planning to come!
Friday Setup - 0800 to 1700
This is ideal for people that want to experience what it's like setting up a MASSIVE event. You will be assisting our production team, our design team, our vendors and most all of the wonderful organizations we are working with in their preparation for the event. This is fast-paced, creative, and often times hilariously fun work, and allows you to get to know your fellow volunteers, as well as the organizations you are assisting. Since this scope of work relies heavily on logistics, we would kindly request a minimum of four hour shifts.
- Friday Green Tie Gala - 1600 to 2300
The Friday evening event is going to be green and glamourous. It includes performance by The Seattle Symphony, Grammy award winner John Proulx, and The Michael Benson Band. Volunteers during this shift will assist in ushering guests, greeting guests, general cleanliness and tidiness of the grounds, setup and final touches of the dining tent/tableware/etc., and other duties as deemed necessary. This team will also assist in the decoration of the tent, which will be designed to effect a sense of "the arboretum indoors". This event is more suited for volunteers who fancy white gloves and black ties, it will demonstrate the high level of detail and efficacy that goes into hosting a black tie gala, as well as allow interaction with some of Seattle's "Big Players", in terms of both socioeconomic and not for profit/philanthropic stature.
- Saturday Grand Opening of Lake Union Park- 0600 to 2100
This is the Main Event. Volunteers here will experience a myriad of possible ways to lend their time and expertise. Boat Building, Kids Tent Assistant, Parking Director, Information Guru, Roamer, Floater, Trash Police, Runner, Coloring Sheet Supervisor, Salmon Shuffler, Plane Watcher, Historical Boat Liaison, the list goes on and on. This is where we will need the bulk of our staff, and is also where you will get to interact with thousands of Seattle's kids, families, teens, tweens, seniors, and everyone in between. This is the most exciting day, as it is filled with scores of fun and highly entertaining positions. We request volunteers to dedicate a six hour block of time if possible, but we will be happy to work around your schedules if not.
- Sunday Teardown - 0730 to 1700
This is where we make it all disappear. There will be a typhoon of activity, and it will be up to us to coordinate it into assembly line-smoothness. Volunteers will help with follow-up, load-out coordination, assistance in load-out, final sweeping of the grounds, and the Ultimate close-out party (which we will all be able to attend). This is akin to the Friday setup shift, only we are instead taking everything away. It is extremely fast paced and fun, and offers the best chance to meet other volunteers and the organization leaders that participated in the event. It is also a great way to see what happens after an event, and the breathtaking swiftness in which large event infrastructures are taken down. This position is crucial to every future event planner, logistics coordinator, concert planner, party thrower, and is best for high energy, highly motivated people that love to take charge and get any job done well.
We thank you for your support! This event won't be anything without your help, and The Adventure School looks forward to working with all of you. Please let us know which shifts/days you prefer, and we will follow up with a list of available positions that fall within your time frames.
Join us for the Grand Opening of Lake Union Park Saturday September 25th, with activities from 7am to 7pm -- see the details here!
For those who are interested, I've made arrangements for us to be the first kayakers to arrive at this new park. For those who want to go there by kayak, we will launch from the Montlake Playfield and paddle to the new park. Launch time is 10:00 AM. We will have REI monitors available for us at the kayak beach to watch our kayaks & gear as we go visit the park venues. We will paddle back to Montlake at a time that works for everyone. (REI will be there hosting a stand-up paddle board demonstration as well.)
For those who just want to go the the park opening on your own, you will be able to identify us by our skirts! :-)
For those who want to VOLUNTEER, there are training classes available that I will post seperately on our Meet-Up site. (Look at the calendar!) You can go to your volunteer portion of the event with us as a kayaker, or on your own. They will let you customize your volunteer hours, they just want to offer you a training class first. A free meal is offered as well as a post park opening party!
The training classes are at the new park Armory Building; 860 Terry Ave N on Thursday, September 16th at 6:00 PM or on Tuesday, September 21st at 6:00 PM. I promised to tell the coordinator how many people signed up from our Meet-Up for a head count for the rest of the free stuff.
Check out the Meet-UP Calendar for Thursday the 16th and/or Tuesday the 21st!!

The Freemont Oktoberfest is this weekend as well.
Lots going on!
