Scouting for islands on the lower Snoqualmie and Snohomish

This is a scouting trip to find camp sites for future trips. We will meet in Cady Park and launch from High Bridge, it is about 10 miles of paddling and will take 2-4 hours.

This description is missing a lot of information due to my navigating off the page while typing - I will add it back in soon.

This is a river paddle, I am limiting to a small group of 5-8 paddlers, I will manage the invitations by selecting people we are comfortable with your skills from the waiting list, if you don't get selected within 48 hours of joining the list, it means you're free to do something else.

Safety - you need solid handling skills, strong eddy skills, bracing, awareness of water movement and obstacles to keep yoursel safe.

Our launch is the ramp under High Bridge Road near the prison farm in Monroe about 5 miles SW from downtown Monroe.

main islands
Snoq1- 1 big wooded one, river left in a bend just before the confluence, about 2
miles after launch.
Snoq2 - 1 more sandbar style same area but midright.
Sky1 - 1 about 1/2 mile upstream after the confluence on the Skykomish wooded
upstream and gravelbar lower end
Snoh1 - Another one just below the confluence and just before 522
Snoh2 - Another one just before and almost under 522
Snoh3 - Another small one sandbar style mid channel about 3/4 mile after 522 with
a long wooded one river left that has a channel behind it that looks
debris chooked
Snoh4 - Another one with trees river right another half mile down
one more sand bar style inside the bend river right another half mile
Snoh5 - another one - big with trees mid channel in the bend
one more with trees coming out of the bend
Snoh 6-8 - 3 more midchannel with trees another quarter mile
half mile later - river narrows at a bridge
another 3/4 mile, tall raiload bridge, Cady park is on the right
We will land on the islands from the downstream end or by turning and paddling upstream for better control.
bring a sack lunch.

lovely islands with a remote feel at the confluence

Ok, it was a little cold, but beautiful day and great paddling.

  • Saul_K

Martina, are you meeting at my house?

    November 10, 2012

  • Martina M.

My kayak is covered with frost. Should be a fun paddle :-)

i'm thinking i'll bring wood tomorrow Phyllis. i have a spare cradle for a boat if needed. lmk, i'm happy to meet at Saul's in that case.

    November 9, 2012

  • Phyllis

Ok Saul. The coffee wil help. But I won't stack my boat. I can do three in cradles on my car if necessary. Hey Martina- you loaning your wood boat to escapees? I figured you'd be in green plastickie tomorrow. Will be good to see you.

    November 9, 2012

  • Martina M.

I can bring an extra boat for the escapee...

    November 9, 2012

  • Saul_K

I'll have coffee ready for you both

    November 9, 2012

  • Saul_K

Phylis, show up at my house at 8:30, then the three of us will meet Martina and Larry at Cady park then drive to High Bridge and launch while avoiding the latest prison escapee.

    November 9, 2012

  • Martina M.

See you all there at Cady at 9am then.

    November 9, 2012

  • Larry M

I'm going to Cady direct from my place. See you there at round 9am

    November 9, 2012

  • Saul_K

Phylis, meet at my house for carpool. The river is usually deep enough that you won't bang your bottom. It's a poplar stretch for drift boat fishermen

    November 9, 2012

  • Phyllis

Carpooling: I can take three boats if anyone wants to meet at my place in Shoreline, or at Sauls, or at Logboom - both on my way.

    November 7, 2012

  • Phyllis

Thanks for circling the launch Saul. I can get there. So, Snoqualmie R just for fun (no islands until confluence). I haven't done that section yet, so cool - if not too rocky. How often do you think I'll scrape my bottom - I mean my kayak's bottom along there. Kinda like the few scraps of gel-coat left on it.

Hey Phyllis, I believe iPads sink too.

Seriously tho, if you just look at google maps, you'll see the islands (minus numbers) that Saul's talking about. But hey, we'll eave big numbers on the islands so the next time Google Earth takes pics, they'll be there.

    1 · November 7, 2012

    • Larry M

You tell her Martina, currently printing and laminating large numbers for the islands..... :)

      November 7, 2012

    • Phyllis

not when they are in a waterproof floaty case

      November 7, 2012

  • Saul_K

I pasted the map in the event. The islands are temporary, the ones with trees usually stay in place, the ones with alders or grass usually move every couple of years. You can see them by zooming in on the river in Google Sattelite view, the names are the ones I made up. We could name the islands Phylisland, Evaland, Larryland instead ;-)

    November 7, 2012

    • Larry M

Ahh. Larryland, where all the women are naked and happy to see me, will be be passing there??? :)

      1 · November 7, 2012

  • Phyllis

And hey Larry, don't laminated maps sink? I'll bring the iPad just in case.

    November 7, 2012

  • Phyllis

Okay I feel like I'm missing something here. Is there an actual Google Earth Map you are directing us to with numbered Islands? Or could you drop us a pin (or an address) at the launch point in Google Maps, because I still don't know where it is ('fraid I never had to stay at the Monroe prison)? And I thought you said we weren't starting in Monroe? And I don't see any islands in the Snoqualmie? And ???

    November 7, 2012

  • Larry M

I have made laminated copies of each island. While i am sure Phyllis will be regaling us with her Ipad, sometimes it is hard to see in the bright light.

    November 7, 2012

  • Martina M.

Thanks Saul. I remember the Sno# islands down below the confluence. They'll be fun to explore. I think Eric's right that these are popular fishing locations in the summertime. The islands I'm thinking of are up above the confluence in the Sky, and it sounds like you're planning to include at least one of these. When we paddled the Sky this summer, the islands above the confluence were empty, and there was a sense of quiet remoteness that is rare. This will be a fun trip, thanks for putting it together!

    November 7, 2012

  • Martina M.

You're right Saul ;-). But wouldn't it be easier to launch from Monroe, rather than to paddle upstream from High Bridge before turning around to head back downstream to Cady?

    November 6, 2012

    • Saul_K

You're heading downstream from high bridge to the confluence then upstream for about 1/2 mile before turning around to Cady Park, if you launched from 203 you would also head downstream to the confluence and then upstream to high bridge, look at a map with the islands shown.

      November 7, 2012

    • Saul_K

I will number the islands for you in the description.

      November 7, 2012

  • Phyllis

Hey Saul, can you clarify launch point? From your comments I gather that Cady Park is our take-out, not put-in. But I'm not sure where High Bridge is. I see High Bridge Road heading up the Snoqualmie toward Duval. I've put in at a launch under the 203 bridge in Monroe....

    November 6, 2012

    • Saul_K

Yes Cady Park is the pull out, that's where I'll meet Larry so we can leave a car there. Put in is at the launch under the bridge on High Bridge road. Under 203 would put us on the Skykomish rather than the Snoqualmie.

      November 6, 2012

    • Saul_K

Not really, because as you can see in the description we are only checking out one upstream island on the Skykomish - we're mostly looking for islands on the Snoqualmie which if we launched on the Sky every island on the Sno would be upstream. Look at the Google Sattelite view, then keep in mind that every spring islands get moved around a bit.

    Wow,
Sorry to disappoint everyone, Saul thanks for adding me to the trip, but I’m heading over to eastern Washington to fly and scuba dive for four days hopefully before I get snowed in with my trailer.
    There for sorry can’t go.
I’ve done the trip twice at Ocean low tide (Fast river current).
From High Bridge right there in down town boat ramp and paddle 12 miles to Snohomish down town boat ramp. Both times moved fast 6MPH average while paddling and had 6-8 inch min depths.
So hitting a rock is a good scrape in your fiber boat. So go slow and be carefull when it starts to get shallow it is possible.
As for Islands I don’t recall seeing anything to camp on, they are ruff stuff however there are fishing bars and shore line in a few good spots one even has a porta potty. Fisherman camp all over the river.
    goodluck

we can carpool from my house. Show up at 8:30. Phylis lives on your way.

    November 5, 2012

    • Eva J.

Can you email me both addresses? I'll see if I can make that work :)

      November 5, 2012

  • Eva J.

Looking at the map I don't see any roads in the park and I don't see High Bridge. Any chance of carpooling? I have all my own gear but I'd prefer to share a ride with others to cut down on my carbon foot print and to avoid getting hopelessly lost.
I'm really looking forward to getting back out there on the water with you all. Thank goodness the apple season is just about over on our little farm!

Hi, so I signed up on the waitlist but after fully reading the details and the safty portion, I don't believe I've got the necessary experience to navigate this trip. Not sure how to remove myself from the waitlist, so please assist with that if you're able to. Thanks and you all have a blast!

    November 5, 2012

  • Saul_K

know where you guys paddled with Eric, but all three rivers don't have many islands except the stretch near Monroe, that's why we picked that route. Google earth has some nice pics.

    November 5, 2012

  • Phyllis

Hey, Eric. Didn't we start in Monroe that time? I don't remember much camping below Snohomish. But then I don't remember much other than cold rain and a few birds through wet binoculars. Must be time to go again, what with the cold rain...

    November 5, 2012

  • Saul_K

We will be paddling a short section agaist the current in the Skykomish probably toward the islands you were thinking of.

    November 5, 2012

  • Saul_K

Martina, there is no Snohomish river in Monroe. I'm guessing you mean the Skykomish, when the Skykomish and the Snoqualmie come together is when the Snohomish starts, we'll be on the Snoqualmie in Monroe until it hits the Skykomish to start the Snohomish, yes we'll check the other locations on another paddle.

    November 5, 2012

  • Martina M.

Why yes, I would love to come, thanks Saul :-). That said, I think the best places I've seen for camping on the local rivers are:

    1. on the Snohomish between Monroe and Snohomish (so above where we're starting) and
    2. on the Skagit, upper fork of the Delta

Both of these offer some truly gorgeous options. Maybe these can be added for later scouting trips?

    November 5, 2012

  • Phyllis

What, Larry.... I only signed up because you were there to pull me out of the eddies!

    November 5, 2012

  • Larry M

AWWW!?!! Not Phyllis!?!?! gee wiz..... Might be nice to see Eric again... but Phyllis?!?!? :)
