New Meetup: Oak Harbor Day Paddle

From: Martin
Sent on: Sunday, October 12, 2008 10:55 AM
Announcing a new Meetup for Seattle Area Sea Kayaking Meetup Group!

What: Oak Harbor Day Paddle

When: October 18,[masked]:00 AM

Where: Click the link below to find out!

Meetup Description: I want to explore the Crescent Beach and Penn Cove area as a day trip, launching from Oak Harbor. The description promises big, magnificent views down Saratonga Passage, a snug harbor, a gorgeous 3-mile long sandy beach backed by luxuriant meadow alive with raptors and a charming wharf.

The currents in Sararoga Passage are generally weak and variable, so I don?t anticipate a problem with currents. This day is not a big current day anyway.

There?s a variety of things to do depending on the weather. If the weather is good I plan to head around Maylor Point and Forbes point and explore Crescent Harbor - 7 mile round trip. If it?s windy then Penn Cove would be a better option.

Meeting options are: the Ravenna Park-and-Ride at 9am. This will get us up there for a 11am launch.
or: Oak Harbor City Park at 11am.

Rating: This trip is rated ?protected? or SK1+. Participants must have their own kayak and all of their own gear. Because of the water temperature a wet suit or dry suit is required.
See descriptions at this link:

What to bring:
Kayak, paddle, Paddle Float and Bilge Pump.
PFD, Clothes for paddling, Kayak Shoes,
Change of clothes for after, towel.
Food and Water for lunch.
Sun Screen, Rain Hat
Sense of Humor and fun.

Directions to the meeting place:
From I-5 take the Ravenna Blvd. and 65th Street exit (exit 170), drive across Ravenna to 65th Street and we?ll meet in the lot on the north side of 65th. Alternatively meet us at Oak Harbor City Park at 11am - drive N. on I-5 to Hwy 20 (exit 230). Go West on hwy 20 and take the left turn-off after 11.6 miles for Oak Harbor via Deception Pass Bridge (don?t take the Hwy 20 Spur to Anacortes).

Martin.
