New Meetup: San Juans trip July2-5 - Prior kayaking experience required - tour the islands

Announcing a new Meetup for Seattle Area Sea Kayaking Meetup Group!

What: San Juans trip July2-5 - Prior kayaking experience required - tour the islands

When: Friday, July 2,[masked]:45 AM

Where:
Washington Park
6300 Sunset Ave
Anacortes, WA 98221

I will be leading a San Juans overnight kayak camping trip in July across the Canadian and US holidays. We will probably have a few out of town paddlers joining us, I'm scheduling this early so that they can buy their airline tickets..

The trip plan is at:
I will post a detailed trip plan with tidal current chart information as well as have the route highlighted on a navigation chart by about mid March 2010.

The basic idea will be to head to a campsite near Anacortes on Thursday night so that we can hit the 6am launch time.
The first night (Friday) will be Pelican Beach on Cypress Island
The second night (Saturday) will be at Doe Island
The third night (Sunday) will be at Turn Island
Monday we will paddle to Friday Harbor and catch the ferry back to Anacortes.

Due to the timing of the slack currents and the velocity of the currents in the afternoon each day, we will generally be launching between 5:30am and 7am each day to get through the various channels while things are safe and manageable. Another reason for the early starts is to avoid the drunk powerboaters that tend to hit the water around noon each day of a holiday weekend. So keep in mind that I will be waking you up with fresh coffee at a really obnoxious hour, you will need to pack quickly and be ready to go.

We will be paddling from Washington Park in Anacortes to Pelican Beach on Cypress Island and camping there.

I will reserve 2 camp sites at Bayview State Park in Bayview for Thursday night, unless I can get the camp sites in Anacortes at Sunset City Park. This way we don't have as far to drive for the 7am launch.

You'll need to wear either a wetsuit or a drysuit.

Of the trips I do in the San Juans, these routes are more suited to those paddlers that have more experience, not begginers, you need to have practiced and succeeded with your safety skills. We will have some fairly large crossings that can get choppy. If you didn't do one of the safety skills checkouts we had last year, we will schedule more before this trip or you can arrange for a one on one by calling or emailing me.

The following trip is rated SK1+/SK3, see descriptions at this link:
