Hello Saul,

I have joined you on a few of your meetups and would very much enjoy a class.  I am looking forward to this.

Thank you for your continued generosity.

Subject: [seakayaking-35] Really basic kayak safety skills training

With all of the postings regarding safety skills training for our general members. I think that we should get something going within the next month or so. This course would be a good very basic skills session to give you a foundation to be able to learn more in a more advanced course. I expect that many of our assistant organizers would also benefit from either taking the course or helping instruct it.

I can address what I usually address, which is a fairly limited repetoire of skills related to bracing, moving and directionally controlling the boat, self rescues and assisted rescues. Most years I don't start doing this until the water warms up since people don't seem to learn very much unless they get in the water and when it is cold they don't get in the water very much. this year I am seeing so many postings that I think we could start earlier.

While I can provide the kayaks, and other gear and rope in a few people to assist with instruction, I only have one loaner drysuit and if we do this class before June, drysuits are critical, Wetsuits work so so for those of you that can tolerate cold well.
So if someone can put together a listing of where they can be rented and what the cost is and email it to me, I'll post up a training session for the month of May.

The format will be:
A weekend day for about 24 people:
People will rent their own drysuits and bring them to the session
I will bring about 12 kayaks, mostly singles.
We will practice self rescue on dry land.
Then we will practice various strokes on the water.
Then braces
Then capsize and self rescue
Then assisted rescues
Then rotate the second group into the water while the first group thaws out.

It should be a fun and good learning experience
