The Mountaineers' once-a-year class is loaded with practical information, hands-on education, introduction to kayak gear, and an emphasis on paddling safety. Learn the basic paddling strokes, how to get back in your boat when you go over, basic trip planning & navigation, and how to recognize & avoid dangerous situations. No prior kayaking knowledge or experience is required to participate in the course. The course consists of three classroom sessions, one pool session, and two open water sessions. Classroom lectures will be held from 6:30-9:30 pm on April 13, April 15, and April 21, 2010, at the Chambers Creek / Pierce County Environmental Services Building in University Place. The pool session (including a swim test) will be held from 12:00 – 4:00 pm on April 18, 2010 at the Clover Park High School Pool in Lakewood. Lake sessions will be held from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm on April 24 and April 25 at American Lake. To graduate, students must attend all the above listed sessions and complete two club-sponsored student paddles on salt water by August 31, 2010. Enrollment is limited to 35 students, so register early! Please contact Peggy Gablehouse at with any questions and to register for the course. The course is $199 for Mountaineers and $249 for non-members. Additional costs: While boats are provided at no extra cost for the pool session, students are required to provide single sea kayaks, or rent them, for both lake sessions (April 24 & 25). The Kayak Academy will provide kayaks and gear for these day-long open water sessions at a rental cost of +/- $97.00 for the weekend. Students will also be required to have a wetsuit or dry suit for the open water sessions. The Kayak Academy's rental cost for a dry suit, cap and a pair of booties for the weekend is +/- $58.00. A course manual will be emailed to you upon registration. Finally, students are encouraged to purchase the optional book, Derek C. Hutchinson “The Complete Book of Sea Kayaking” Fourth Edition, The Globe Pequot Press (approximately $20).
