Do you enjoy travel but put it off because it's not affordable as one person, not fun traveling alone, or too much work to organize by yourself? Travel may be a day trip, a weekend outing, or a longer vacation overseas. If you are single, divorced, widowed, or your partner or friends don't wish to travel, this is the group for you. It can open the door to the expansion of horizons, the amazing personal enrichment, and the marked rejuvenation of body and brain that travel provides.
This group is suitable for:
• those who wish to create their own trip (independent travel), which provides more flexibility of time and convenience than a commercial tour, and would like to find travel companion in their age group;
• those who want to find a roommate for an commercial tour or cruise; or
• travel professionals who want to advertise their tours to a more targeted audience; or
• those who are interested in joining the independent travel or tours offered by group members or travel professionals.
This group is for people 40 years and older (in age or maturity) who wish to travel with one or few people and appreciate the companionship and cost sharing. Having a travel companion does not mean you have to share a bedroom--you can book lodging so each person has his/her own bedroom and bathroom. Nor does it mean that you do everything together--you can arrange some independent sightseeing or time alone during the trip.
How this group works:
Local or overseas tours offered by travel professionals are advertised as meetups, and those who are interested can sign up, and more information will be sent.
Some Seattle-area events with a strong connection to another country or culture (art exhibits, dance performances, drama, etc) are announced as meetups, and those who sign up can meet and connect before the event or during intermission. Examples are Swan Lake (Russian ballet to Russian music) or performance of Indonesian dance with gamelan orchestra (traditional Indonesian music). This is a great way to naturally meet group members with similar interests who can be future friends or travel companions. Also, group members can do their own meetups for free, for cultural events like this that they are attending, and connect with other group members.
If you are planning a trip, you can do a meetup to meet potential travel companions. This is easy to do, guidance is provided, and you make a $25 financial contribution towards Meetup's charges for hosting this group. Financial contributions from members and travel professionals advertising tours help this group continue and be there for you and others in the future. Because membership in the group is not monitored, if you are seeking a travel companion for a trip or to share a room during a tour, it is vastly safer to hold your own meetup far in advance to meet people in person and get to know them before traveling together. (Online profiles are not reliable.) Doing your own meetup is one of the the great advantages of this group, and a very effective use of Meetup's software.
The Group Organizer organizes one or two overseas trips a year, and like any member of the group, holds a meetup for those who are interested. These are planned up to a year in advance because of the various benefits of advance planning. For 2017, destinations are Morocco in late April/early May, and Myanmar (Burma) in early November. Future destinations will be mostly cities and countryside in Europe, including in France, Italy, and Austria, plus Kyoto in Japan. If you are interested, please contact the Group Organizer after joining the group.
Occasionally, we may have informal meetups over a meal at a restaurant in Seattle, usually an ethnic restaurant.
If you are a travel professional and would like to advertise your tours, please contact the Group Organizer. You pay a modest fee that goes to pay Meetup's charges for hosting the group, and your announcement reaches over 500 residents aged 40 and older in the Pacific Northwest. The announcement can be any length and includes description and photos. You will need to join the group at least temporarily to do this.
• Members assume total responsibility for choosing travel companions and traveling with them.
• Tour announcements are not necessarily endorsements of a tour or a company. They are meant to provide travel options for group members. Members assume total responsibility for joining advertised tours.
Join us and enjoy the benefits and joys of travel and companionship!
The Meetup company charges Group Organizers semi-annual dues for hosting any Meetup group. Some travel groups on Meetup are the marketing arm of a travel company, which may be out of state, and the company pays the group dues. The Travel Companions group is a true local community group and resource. There is no affiliation with a business. Being a community group, it depends on members and tour advertisers for support.
