Data Scientist

  • Engage with the business to frame, structure and prioritize business problems where analytic projects or tools can have the biggest impact on Nordstrom’s business
  • Perform large-scale statistical research, analysis, and modeling in the areas of web analytics, social media, and customer marketing
  • Communicate insights and recommend areas for further data discovery
  • Design optimization algorithms, working with colleagues to develop and deploy new products as required
  • Research new analytical methods and tools for optimizing the customer experience


  • Fluency with statistical and machine learning algorithms such as decision trees, neural networks, collaborative filtering, clustering, survival analysis, graph theory, etc.
  • Experience in experimental design
  • Experience working with developers to turn analysis into scalable products
  • Programming skills in the Hadoop environment (Map/Reduce, Pig, Hive, HBase, Mahout)
  • Knowledge of visualization tools such as Tableau
  • Knowledge of analysis tools such as R, SAS, or Matlab
  • Programming in Java, Python
  • Curiosity and excitement for delivering truly unique and differentiating customer experiences
  • Experience in retail, ecommerce, or digital advertising a plus
