Jan. WP Developer Meetup - OOP and MVC in plugins

January's developer meetup is focused on how Object-Oriented Programming practices and the Model-View-Controller design pattern can be implemented in WordPress plugins. Ian Dunn will give an introduction to OOP and MVC, then share some practical tips and examples on how to build plugins using them. We hope this will spark some interesting conversations about how to apply best practices to WordPress plugin development, and help us become better programmers. Many of the principles involves can be applied to theme development as well.

OOP and MVC are intermediate/advanced topics, so we recommend that beginners review these tutorials to get a basic understanding of them before attending the meetup:

Understanding Model-View-Controller
Object-Oriented PHP for Beginners

The presentation officially starts at 7 PM, but feel free to show around 6 PM for food an networking. The Alibi room has great food!

Hey everyone, thanks for coming to the meetup the other night, and for all the positive feedback. If you've got an constructive criticism, I'd love to hear that too so I can improve the presentation. Let me know if any parts needed to be made more clear or if you've got any other feedback.

The Seattle meetup's functionality plugin is at https://github.com/WordPress-Seattle/wpsea-functionality. It's also in the wordpress.org repository at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wpsea-functionality/, but the Github version is the latest.

I've posted the slides at http://iandunn.name/wp-oop-mvc if anyone wants to view them early or follow along during the presentation. We're gonna skip a lot of them tomorrow night because of time constraints, but I left them all in for anyone who's interested.

The lab files are at http://iandunn.name/wp-oop-mvc-lab.zip.

If anybody has anything specific about OOP/MVC that they'd like to see covered, leave a comment and I'll see if I can work it into the presentation.

Hi Behauden, I think the presentation will be a good mix of background/theory and practical application. The primary subject of the presentation is applying OOP/MVC techniques to plugin development, but we'll start with the basics before we get into that. There won't be a lot of time, though, so I'd definitely recommend checking out the tutorials above if you're not familiar with the basics.

Will the developer meetup always be the 3rd or 4th Tues. of each month?

Thanks for the informative links Ben.

I am just getting started with Visual Studio. Do you have any suggested resources for using VS for WordPress?

A lot of people use PHPStorm, Aptana/Eclipse or Netbeans, too.
