The weather is looking good for biking this Saturday at Indian Head. Late fall is a nice time to ride the scenic Indian Head Rail Trail and enjoy some excellent BBQ and sides at George's Ribs. Rev. Jake needs the exercise, fresh air, and wonderful ribs at George's Ribs. So I'm going to do it, and I welcome you to join me!
Although it's located just 20 miles outside the Beltway from National Harbor, Indian Head is like a trip back in time to a relaxed country lifestyle where people are friendly and you see local roadside BBQ places instead of chain stores. It's a perfect nearby destination for us to get away for a day and enjoy a peaceful place and time which no longer exists in the busy Washington metropolitan area.
Meet Up at George's Ribs Restaurant
We'll meet in the parking lot of George's Ribs where we'll start and end the ride. Check the exact location on the Google Meetup map at the top of this event notice. The parking lot is fairly small, but there is free parking on the streets next to George's Ribs. From there, we'll ride a half mile on a back road to get on the Indian Head Trail.
Bike Ride on the Indian Head Trail
The Indian Head Rail Trail opened seven years ago. It's a flat and very wide paved rail trail with good facilities that runs 13 miles from Indian Head to White Plains near La Plata. The trail closely follows the Mattawoman Creek nature preserve while passing through hardwood forests and wetlands that feature a beaver dam, birding areas, occasional farms, an archery range, and country homes.
We'll ride from Indian Head to the end of the trail at White Plains, and then return the same way. The total riding distance is approximately 25 miles and will take about 3 hours with rest breaks.
HELMETS ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL RIDERS!
We'll ride at an average pace of 11 mph, which is about normal for most people. This ride is suitable for all types of bikes and for riders in decent biking shape. Toilet facilities are available along the trail.
Return to George's Ribs BBQ
After the bike ride, we'll return to our starting point at George's Ribs. It's a local Charles County favorite located on the main Rt. 210 highway leading into Indian Head. George's Ribs is a casual restaurant with a place-your-order and pick-up counter, and no-frills dining on inside and outside tables.
The popular pork ribs are succulent, tender, and tasty. Simply heaven! The pulled pork, BBQ chicken, and fried fish are also very good. And the sides of collard greens, cole slaw, potato salad, and green beans are freshly made. Even the french fries are crisp and tasty.
A whole meal big enough for two people runs about $15.
A meal at George's reminds us of how good American highway food used to be. Nothing fancy, but very hearty with generous portions and delicious flavors that fill you up.
No beer or wine are served at George's, so bring your own refreshments. If you forget, there are several retail liquor stores on Indian Head highway nearby. Hey, it's the country and they know how to provide what people need...
This is an outdoor event that depends upon good biking weather to be successful. I'll post a notice here on Saturday morning before 9:00 am if it needs to be changed or canceled.
Call Jake at 703-798-8435 with any questions.
I hope to see you there!
