Hallberg Butterfly Gardens is a must see for those who like all-things-nature. This incredible garden was started back in 1883 and planted and cared for by the Hallberg family members. Louise Hallberg has lived here and nurtured these gardens most of her 90+ years. This is a once-a-year opportunity to stroll through the gardens. Admission is free, but there are many opportunities to spend money on plants and gift items, plus many donation boxes to put a couple bucks in.
Plan on at least an hour to see everything. Exhibits are here and there and volunteers are set up in different locations to learn about the plants, butterflies, birds and other jewels of nature. The path can be a bit uneven, with curves and small ponds in between.
I went last year and by the time the doors opened at 10:00, most of the parking spaces on the property "among the apple trees" had been taken. There is street parking available on Oak Grove Avenue. I'd advise getting there early and we will meet at the entrance at 10:00. They have plants for sale before 10:00 out front to keep you busy.
Look for "Visitor Parking" signs. I was very impressed last year at how organized they are for a crowd this size and the volunteers are extremely helpful.
Directions: The gardens are in Sebastopol on Hwy. 116 towards Forestville. Take US-101 and exit the freeway at the CA-12 junction traveling WEST toward SEBASTOPOL for about 3 miles. At the stop light, turn RIGHT onto FULTON, but get immediately into the left turn lane. Turn LEFT onto OCCIDENTAL RD. and follow it 4.5 miles until CA-116. At this light, turn RIGHT and drive for a little over half a mile. Take your first LEFT, which is OAK GROVE AVE. At the first stop sign, there will be a sign announcing the HALLBERG BUTTERFLY GARDENS. Turn LEFT onto the dirt road. Please drive SLOWLY and park to the RIGHT (if this entry seems congested, the parking area is probably full and find a place on OAK GROVE AVE. to park).
I'll post carpool information later if needed, or if you have room in your car for more, let us know your carpool location.
No pets are not allowed.
