• Serverless Summer Slam

    Stockwerk Coworking Space

Hey Serverless Scalers, summer is coming and we are happy to have three phantastic speakers for our summer special. The preliminary agenda is as follows: - Serverless <3 Node.js - "A Love Story" by Adnan Rahić A romantic tale of an unexpected love between two young technologies, teaching how to create real-world apps with Serverless and Node.js. Adnan Rahić is a JavaScript developer, teacher, and mentor. Developer Advocate at Dashbird.io, author of "Serverless JavaScript by Example" and local leader at freeCodeCamp Sarajevo. - FN Project - CI/CD on the Open Source Container-Native Serverless Plattform FN by Maximilian Jerg This talk will be about some lessons-learnt with Functions (Serverless) in combination with the major cloud vendors. Also, we will talk about why there is the need for an open source container-native serverless platform and do an Fn-Project live demo. - Newsblock - Reactive Programming with Event Grid - Going Serverless all the Way by Christoph Wille Events are everywhere in modern solutions - and although they are so important, you have to go to great lengths to get going before being productive: the infamous "plumbing" gets into your way. How about a solution that does all the event routing from to publisher to subscriber? Including registration, retry logic, monitoring as well as near real-time delivery built as a dynamically scaling platform as a service offering? Azure Event Grid offers all of the above (and more) - and although being a relatively new service in Azure, quite a few services already publish to it. This means that for a lot of scenarios the old "hammer polling" and "exponential backoff" is a thing of the past, effectively saving money (compute and transactions) - which is obviously an important argument. However, Event Grid is not an Azure-services-only (or even Azure-only) solution: it serves well as a backbone for your applications-specfic events. Goodbye WebHook plumbing work, welcome push-push! Christoph is MVP for Azure and publishes the code of his projects on https://github.com/christophwille (includes Windows as well Azure projects). He is an independent consultant, supporting companies in everything Windows and Web (he was ASP.NET MVP for ten+ years). Aside from working on his own projects, he is also involved in other OSS projects, such as ILSpy. We are still searching for drink and food sponsors for this great event. Looking forward seeing you, Gerald and László

  • Serverless Meetup

    Stockwerk Coworking Space

Hey Serverless Scalers, it is about time for our first meetup in 2018. We are very happy to have Pál Dávid Gergely talk about Moving a Node.js application from Virtual Machines to Containers and then to Serverless Pál will guide us through the process of moving an existing Node.js code base from a virtual machine based running environment to Serverless. Along the way he will stop at Kubernetes, so that we can take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of choosing the middle ground between Serverless and a VM based setup. The actual example will use a simple Node.js application written by Pál for demonstrating the steps. All of the services will use Google Cloud Platform to demonstrate the different steps, but they should work very similarly with any other provider. The slides of the presentation, the source code, and the configuration files will all be shared after the meetup. About Pál Dávid Gergely: Pál is a System Engineer with hands-on experience with many cloud providers, including AWS, Google, Azure and IBM SoftLayer. He likes to architect and build complete solutions that are resilient and scale well from databases up to the application layer. He is currently working at Doctusoft as a Solution Engineer specializing in Google Cloud Platform. We will then have a small break. The second part of the event is an orga talk and will be about the current state and latest developments in the serverless world, assembled and presented by Gerald. We are still open to sponsors for the event. Seeing you soon, Gerald & László

  • Azure Functions Workshop

    Stockwerk Coworking Space

Hi Serverless-Scalers! Our next meetup on Wednesday, 22. November 2017 will be nothing less than an Azure Functions Workshop from instructor Christoph Wille. A brief description of the workshop: What was (is) known as Azure App Service WebJobs morphed into full-fledged serverless Azure Functions. These are constantly evolving, and the integrations keep on coming: event processing with Azure Event Grid and/or Stream Analytics, database triggers for Azure Cosmos DB, cross-platform developer experience and of course Linux and containers are in the mix too. Did I mention that you can bring any programming language? What we'll do - followed by a show-and-tell presentation about the latest and greatest features of Azure Functions, we'll dive into a coding session (a basic understanding of Azure Functions is assumed, you might want to at least watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdiKoWdrIn4 ). This means: bring your Macs and PCs (curiosity too)! If you don't happen to have an Azure subscription, please go to http://azure.com/free/ and sign up for an entirely free subscription (cc is used for verification only). Christoph Wille is MVP for Azure and publishes the code of his projects on https://github.com/christophwille (includes Windows as well Azure projects). He is an independent consultant, supporting companies in everything Windows and Web (he was http://ASP.NET MVP for ten+ years). Aside from working on his own projects, he is also involved in other OSS projects, such as ILSpy and Refactoring Essentials for Visual Studio. You can reach him via https://twitter.com/WilleChristoph/ . Microsoft is going to provide sandwiches and softdrinks. Finally, if you are working on something in the Serverless space and want to talk about or discuss it, please do not hesitate to contact us, so that we can put you on the speakers list for the next meetup. Best regards, Laszlo & Gerald
