What we're about

All of So. Cal. Shambhala Centers are closed until the end of April to help halt the spread of the Corona virus. But our community continues! Sunday sitting so far, is now online. Take good care. la.shambhala.org/programs - look for Sunday Sittings.

Welcome to the Shambhala Meditation Center in Mar Vista! We are a community of meditators based in the Venice/Mar Vista area. Our center is located at 3877A Grand View Blvd. between Venice Blvd and Washington Place. We gather throughout the week to practice meditation, offer instruction to beginners, discuss and contemplate the practice, and celebrate as a community the natural awake sanity within us. Please take a look at our ongoing calendar for upcoming meetups.

WHAT IS MEDITATION?

Meditation is a practice that anyone can do. It is based on the radical idea that the natural state of the mind is not scattered, nervous, and confused, but rather calm, creative, and clear. Practicing regularly provides a way to settle into this natural state more often. At the Shambhala Meditation Center of Los Angeles, we begin by training in shamatha or mindfulness meditation. This foundational technique allows you to tune into the present moment, at home, at work, or wherever you go in your day to day life.

"We have to know what we mean by meditation at all. Sometimes we use the word to mean emptying out or letting go. Sometimes we mean relaxation. However, the point of meditation practice is actually to rediscover our hidden neurosis and our hidden sanity at the same time." ― Chögyam Trungpa

White Awake Study Group ONLINE

Online event

Meeting every 3rd Sunday. Who We Are: The Los Angeles Shambhala White Awake Study Group is a group for anyone who identifies as white who wants to learn more about the realities of racism and the unintended impacts of white privilege so that they can consciously contribute to racial justice rather than unconsciously perpetuate patterns of racism. We gather with other white people to create a space of learning without causing more harm. We hold the Shambhala values of basic goodness, bravery, gentleness, kindness, and understanding at the center of our study. What We Do: Over the course of the year 2020, 3rd Sunday of the month, we will be meeting to study the NEW YORK TIMES bestseller, How to Be An Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi. Drop-ins are welcome whether or not you’re current with the reading. Each meeting we will take time for a short meditation period, a brief review of Group Norms and may include personal writing practice, small group and large group discussion. Occasionally a meeting will deviate from the book altogether to focus on a relevant article, film or podcast. For questions and links please email: [masked] Suggested Donation: $5.
