Strobist 102 – Studio and Classic Lighting Techniques

  • Jun 11, 2013 · 1:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Now, you know how to take flash off your camera and get a taste about off camera flashes. We are going to take the next step with a studio session on how to setup some of the classic studio lighting technique for portraits ( http://digital-photography-school.com/6-portrait-lighting-patterns-every-photographer-should-know )

We are organizing a Strobist 102 workshop in a studio with beautiful model. The workshop is more a learning by doing and not much boring talk :-)

To use the time efficiently we will suggest some setups, help to setup them and let you shoot. Questions are welcome and will make the workshop more real, so we can explain/cover whatever you want to know.

Since the studio is not that big and we want you to have the maximum amount of time to take pictures we will limit that workshop to four people per group and will take two groups. The way how it works is “First come first in”, so you also need to tell us what group you wanna be. We will send you a confirmation when you made it to the list :-)

And before you ask. You can NOT book two sessions since we want to give as many people as possible the chance to attend.

Address: 武宁路955弄22号601室 (No 22, Lane 955 Wuning Lu, Room 601)

Time: 1st group 1pm - 3pm | 2nd group 4pm - 6pm

Fee: 280RMB/photographer

Language: English

If you are confirmed then please send me your phone number (i will send you mine as well) in case you can not find the way or we need to inform you about a last minute change.

Below photos of the model and the studio we booked.

Im in total support of David and Lutz in terms of cost, its only fair to compensate these 2 gentlemen to cover their time, efforts and potential risks of equipment damage.

It also sounds like there were different expectations in terms of "learning". I personally enjoyed the mix of experience levels but if others would prefer, perhaps the groups can categorized into 'Advanced' photographers or for 'Beginners/ first timers' like me. Looking forward, i'd also be interested to know if anyone share the same interest:
+ have a darker room / or black background paper.
+ hire people subjects with interesting features (old people with lots of wrinkles, people with freckled, scars, tattoos, piercings etc).

    Cheers,
    D

Nice! Let's theme the future strobist meetup. Derek, do you have link to the photo? Maybe we can do this in a park in an afternoon where all the old folks hang out. :)

There was a thread of comments relating to the cost of the workshop. Saw it in the email but can't find it here. However, since it has gone out on the email, I'd like to response here. Yes, the charge of the workshop is more then the cost. We didn't do that for our own compensation. We simply use that to handle potential risk of people not showing up or damage to gear and studo. I lost a SB800 flash in previous workshop. While we are not doing this to make money, we don't want to lose money doing this as well. Setting up prepay is too much pain. The goal of the workshop is to give people interested in lighting a start as well as share the resources we have been collecting over the years. That's why we also disclose the actual cost of studio and model as well as their contact info so people can do arrange themselves for future shooting.

Thank you very much for the explanation, I appreciate the effort you both put in. Oh btw, if anyone wanted to book Ling Ling, she asks for 300/day.

      1 · June 15, 2013

    • taweili

Thanks. Just need to post a quick correction for Ling Ling. 300 is her hourly rate, not daily since her contact info is here. It's best people don't get the wrong idea if they want to contact her for shoot.

Well, why it has to be near the city center (BTW, I am coming from Minhang)? We are looking for studios in whole Shanghai, also to see some other parts of the city and meet their owners...mostly photographers like you and me. I agree that the trigger issue slowed down a bit but we cannot always make sure that everything is in 100% condition. The price, maybe it seems a bit expensive but what you want to do with a softbox, better buy a beauty dish for that 280 RMB :-)

    1 · June 13, 2013

    • Higgs S.

I have had times with multiple triggers and everyone stepped all over each other and you can just hear the flash gun struggling.

      2 · June 14, 2013

    • taweili

We should have done a better job on the trigger. The intention is to have just one trigger and people take turn to shoot. The one with trigger also have the full attention of the model. Making portrait isn't just about lighting but also posing of the model. It's lucky for us that Ling Ling did pretty well in the midst of all these chaos. :)

Something that I totally forgot about when shoting. We were trying to get some dark background higher contract images by trying to flag and put a black background in place, thankfully we had many willing lighting assistants.

What I totally forgot is that we had a light wit ha grid and some barn doors. So if we had used this as the key light then this would have stopped light spilling everywhere and we could have had a neon pink backdrop and still come out with black background.

We only had one grid set up so if we added a hair light on top of this then that could have been more of a challenge, but Derek was interested in high contrast portraits and this was something that I totally missed.

So with one light (grid key light) we could have had high contrast / split lighting without any messing around trying to position flags and hand held back drops.

Location was quite far from city center, and with only one flash trigger the session started slowly. For the price I could of bought an actual softbox. Yay to iPhone photo apps, thanks to Ling Ling for modelling and Lumi and Taweili for organizing.

Its gonna be my first studio using flash / strobes. Any past experiences and recommendation on which of these films would be good for Tues? Potra 400 / Provia 100 / Velvia 50/100 /Ektar 100 / E100 / T-Max 400? Thanks for the advice.

Ok, FYI, both of the groups are full now. If you still keep posting we will take that as the dropout choice in case one of the already confirmed people will drop out.
In this case the next in the line will fill that slot.

So, please do not sign up anymore but only if you are willing to standby and being "used" as replacement ;-)

Hi Frank, thanks for your request. However, it will be quite tight there.
However, we got two free spots in Group #2, so you and Paul could move to group two to shoot together. Please let me know.
