Although it wasn't by design, the core membership of this group tends to be 40+ and mostly ladies - although we do welcome gents and younger folk to join us on our adventures!
If you love to travel and take off for the weekend to escape the winter blues, this is the group for you! Winter flight schedules are published in the spring and fares steadily rise as more tickets sell, so what could be better than to get in early and have a cheap autumn/winter escape planned for when the summer is over! In order to take advantage of cheap flights, this generally means that we have to book overseas breaks well in advance. Other events can be more spontaneous, although we do like to give sufficient notice for all events.
We do not accept members without a personal portrait photo in their profile - we like to see who we are meeting!
When you RSVP to an event it means that you have checked and entered it into your diary and have every intention of attending. It does not mean "I will put my name down for this but will cancel at the last minute if something better comes along". We know that life happens and plans can change, but serial last minute cancellations and no shows can result in being removed from the group. It is not fair to other members or to organizers, particularly when tables have been booked and members who wanted to go did not find a place.
Whilst it is not a condition of membership, we ask that if possible members make a small voluntary contribution of a couple of pounds (or more) per year to go towards running costs. The operation of this group website costs the organizer US$ 180 per year to the USA parent organization, so any small contribution towards that is much appreciated.
The main purpose of this group is to take advantage of cheap flights to Greece (and elsewhere) and enjoy short breaks during the off season, when hotel rates are also at their lowest. We can also enjoy days out, weekend breaks in the UK and other get togethers when not traveling!
This is NOT a business venture - just taking advantage of my experience and skills. When we travel to Greece I will get discounted hotel rates whenever I can, but I pay my way the same as everyone else traveling. I (Sandra) am a travel agent with 20 years experience of living and working in Greece.
Throughout the winter months November – March there are regular flights with Easyjet from Manchester to Athens and although it is not sunbathing weather, it is generally going to be considerably warmer than here in the UK (in February we had 17 degrees) and there is plenty to see and do in Athens itself all year round.
As well as weekends in Athens, we can look at other destinations, wherever flights are cheap and the airport is easily accessible from/to the town or resort.
Through the summer months we can get together for days out to the coast or other interesting destinations, either independently by train, or on a tour from one of the local tour bus companies.
This is a group for mature adults who are responsible for themselves and will take all necessary precautions when traveling abroad. Whilst I don't expect everyone to want to do the same thing or explore at the same pace, if you do go off and do your own thing I will ask that we exchange numbers so we can keep track of each other and check on each others safety.
THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW: All members would need to take care of their own flights – when I see cheap flights available I will publish details but all will be responsible for booking their own seats.
Plans would be based on flights from/to Manchester. If another airport suits you better and you find flights available that is fine BUT if your arrival and departure times do not coincide with the Manchester flight times, you may have to make your own way to/from the hotel.
Where transfers are arranged in Greece, costs will depend on the number of people in the group, as a minibus is the same price however many people travel. If the group is small and the per person costs work out too much for a minibus, we can use the Metro in Athens instead, or taxis (depending on number in the group).
Hotel and transfer arrangements, if made by me through our office in Greece (although you are welcome to book your own hotel) would have to be paid direct to the company via our secure online payment link, in EUROS by credit/debit card. I will NOT collect any monies from members.
Our office (Aegean Thesaurus Travel) is a fully bonded travel agency registered in Greece BUT these travel arrangements come with NO TRAVEL INSURANCE so it is recommended you arrange your own personal travel insurance, particularly if you have any medical issues.
