Impromptu Exploratory Hike – Audrey Munson Connect-The-Dots Peripatetic Perambulaton (Battery To Morningside Heights).
10-14 essentially flat miles on city streets and park paths at a moderately brisk pace.
Walk from the Battery to Morningside Heights connecting statues depicting, or ascribed to be depicting, Audrey Munson. Bring lunch, snacks and water. Early drop-out virtually anywhere along the route. End at subway stop near Columbia University.
Meet the leader, Craig Nunn, before 10:15 AM at the Manhattan Staten Island Ferry Terminal, upstairs by the restrooms. As though you were there to catch the ferry (which we won’t be doing). Be ready to start walking at 10:15 AM. Awful or dangerous weather cancels. Light or intermittent rain or snow or threat thereof will not cancel but may modify or shorten route. Contact leader after 7:00 AM morning of hike if uncertain. No need to register – just show up on time.
Audrey Munson (1891-1996), known as “American Venus” was a silent film star and model for several of the most prominent American sculptors of the early 20th century – especially those of the beaux arts public monument variety. There have been up to 15 or more statues (depending on whom you believe) depicting Audrey in Manhattan alone (others as far away as Madison, Wisconsin and San Francisco). Her career was short and tragic – she spent the last 65 years of her life in a psychiatric asylum, dying in 1996 at the age of 104. Check her out at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audrey_Munson .
