  • Riverside Drive and Central Park Walk with Optional Holiday Nostalgia Train ride
A 6 mile moderate paced 3 hour walk from the 125 street / St. Nicholas Ave A, C and D Subway station to Riverside Drive and Central Park ending at Grand Army Plaza at the south end of Central Park. The plan is to walk from the McDonalds (at 125 street / St. Nicholas Ave) and to Morningside Park, climbing the stairs up to Morningside Drive and stopping off at the Cafe East of Columbia University for a bathroom break. Then walk south along Riverside Drive to the Soldiers and Sailors monument at 89st, then walk east to Central Park. Entering Central Park at 90st, we’ll walk along the Reservoir, Great Lawn, The Lake, Strawberry Fields, Cherry Hill, Bow Bridge, Behesda Fountain, The Mall, The Pond ending the walk at Grand Army Plaza at 59 street and 5th Avenue. As an optional walk prequel, attendees can ride the 1930’s era Holiday Nostalgia Subway Train to the meetup location at the 125st / St. Nicholas Ave A, C and D subway station. This train will depart from the 2nd Ave F train stop at 12pm on Sunday November 25, 2018. The walk leader John K plans on riding the Holiday Nostalgia Train from the 2nd Ave F train stop to the meetup location at 125st / St. Nicholas Ave. The Holiday Nostalgia Train is a special eight-car subway train of R1-9 cars from the 1930s complete with rattan seats, ceiling fans, incandescent bulb lighting, drop-sash style windows, vintage roll signs, and original advertisements. There is no extra charge for riding this train, just the normal fare you pay for riding the subway. http://www.nytransitmuseum.org/holidaynostalgiarides/ The second departure of this train for the 2018 holiday season is scheduled for 12pm from the 2nd Ave / Houston stop of the F train. It should take approximately 30 minutes for the train to travel via the 6th Ave and Central Park West route of the D train from 2nd Ave to 125 street making local stops along 6th Ave before running express from Columbus Circle to 125 street. The Holiday Nostalgia Train should be parked for approximately 25 minutes between runs at the 2nd Ave Station. So anyone interested in riding the train can arrive at the 2nd Ave F train station 25 minutes prior to the 12pm departure, which gives you plenty of time to take photos and explore the train. Rain postpones this event. No food stops. Bring snacks and water (the water fountains in Central Park are shut down for the winter). Meeting location: Outside the McDonalds on 125 street just west of St. Nicholas Ave. This is a small McDonalds so you may not be able to use the bathroom if it is crowded. Meeting time: 1:00 pm We will should be leaving promptly at 1pm so try to arrive before that time to sign in for the walk. People interested in taking the optional Holiday Nostalgia train, should try to get to the 2nd Ave F train stop shortly before 12pm or catch the train when it makes a local stop at a station convenient to you. Ending location: 5th Ave / 59th Street Grand Army Plaza. Subways: N, R and W Ending time: 4:00 pm Distance: 6 miles Bathrooms: Columbia University 1 mile. Possibly Riverside Park: 2.5 miles Delecorte Theater: 4 miles Bethesda Fountain: 5 miles Grand Army Plaza: 6 miles (Central Park Arsenal, Plaza Hotel or Trump Tower) Drop out points: Numerous.
