Coney Island Mermaid Parade

CONEY ISLAND MERMAID  PARADE

UPDATE: MAY 30

$101,000 REACHED!

UPDATE: MAY 6

DUE TO SANDY AND INCREASED TOWN FEES

THE PARADE NEEDS $100,000 TO HAPPEN THIS YEAR. A FUNDRAISER BEGINS ON MAY 7.

KEEP UP WITH THE PROGRESS:

http://www.savemermaids.org/

We'll watch the Coney Island Mermaid Parade starting at its earlier time, 1:00 pm this year.

We will leave CT early in the morning (carpooling) in order to get to Coney Island before the traffic and get our parking spaces in our favorite lot.

NOTE:  This year we''ll try some new strategies for before, during, and after the parade. We may still "stake our territory" along the parade route with our chairs, but there will be other options, too. We might stay longer at the pre-parade "staging" area for all those close-up shots. Feedback is welcomed from those who joined me last year.

Stay tuned. It should be a wild and fun day with a plethora of colorful photo ops. Ms. Colombia, we'll see you soon!

Note: This parade is known for being risqué. It may not be for everyone.

While I had a great time at my niece's clam bake, I sure did miss going with you guys! Wound up making my 1st ever visit to Coney just yesterday, what a cool place. After viewing the Google shots on the Sandy link Sue just posted, it's hard to believe that Sandy's visit was just last year....

    • Sue F.

So glad you went, Mike. You wouldn't believe what it's like there on Mermaid Parade day. You'll have to join us another year. I'd love to go there on a gray winter or fall morning to capture the deserted boardwalk (with a dark figure or two in the distance,) pier, amusements, and buildings silhouetted in the fog.

A lot of work went into the cleanup. It's amazing that it was so fast.

Now that we've recently seen the Coney Island boardwalk to Surf Avenue, here are some photos of the area after Sandy that make us really appreciate the efforts made to get the town "back.

Thanks again to all my "Buds." I guess it's the teacher in me that likes to find fun opportunities for people. On to investigating more cool and colorful events and designing more creative photo ops for us. Let me know if you have any ideas. I don't think there's anything this terrific group of people can't do.

Unfortunately, I lost my bank card on a bike ride this evening. I won't have access to $$ if I don't go to the bank in person tomorrow. So, I will stay back in CT. I sent Steve an email, but I don't have his $$. Does anyone else have a way to reach him to be sure he receives the message? I don't want him waiting for me tomorrow morning. Enjoy! I look forward to seeing everyone's pictures!

We will miss you, Kathy! How awful about your card.

Unfortunately I have to work and will be missing it this year. last year was a blast and hopefully Sandy didn't ruin it all. I am looking forward to seeing all the great photos. have fun.

    1 · June 21, 2013

    • Sue F.

Thanks, "Duck." We'll miss you and Diane. Some of us will remain in the staging area for the parade, so we should have a "captive" audience /subjects while they wait to fall in line for the parade. Another year, perhaps!

Lance, do you want to meet in Westport @ Sue's exit (detailed below) or I can meet you on-route to that exit.

Gene, do you want to meet me in Cromwell? if so what time? I can take you to Lance!

    June 20, 2013

    • Lance J.

Janet & Gene, please email me LJohnson-at-GDEB-dot-com to finalize meeting location and time - thanks

      June 20, 2013

    • Sue F.

I had originally established the Exit 66 Wilbur Cross commuter lot as a good central meetup point. We used it last year and it's very convenient. My carpool as well as Steve's will not need to stop there at this point, but it might work great for you guys. Whatever's best for you!

  • Sue K

This is my first mermaid parade, and I'm looking for tips from some of the veterans. Should we bring chairs? I was planning on getting the photographer's pass, does that mean I shouldn't bring seating? Any other tips on what we should bring besides sunscreen and cash? Thanks

    June 20, 2013

    • Sue F.

Sue, I posted a "Final Details" file with all the info on Monday. Please take a look at it as it covers most of what you need to know. You'll have 3 options, and once you choose your plan, we'll take care of you! ; )

      June 20, 2013

    • Sue K

Thanks guys. That's some very thorough info! Sue, as usual, you've got all the details covered.

      June 20, 2013

  • Sue F.

PLEASE remember to check the Final Details file, everyone. It tells you what to bring, options for the day, etc. There are links for the event with a parade route map, hisotry, and other interesting info...even 2 videos about real-llife mermaids and pics of Ms. Colombia (for the newbies.) SEE YOU ALL AT THE CARPOOL CARAVAN, Exit 41 commuter lot (Merritt Parkway in Westport) on Saturday. We will leave from there together!

    I'll be there waiting!

      June 18, 2013

    • Sue F.

      Perfect. Thanks, Timothy! ; )

      June 18, 2013

  • Sue F.

Ramananda (East Haven) and Timothy (Danbury)... you can meet all our carpools at the Exit 41 commuter lot (at route 33) in Westport off the Merritt Parkway. (Route 15, the Wilbur Cross Parkway from Meriden, turns into the Merritt Parkway.) As of now, all cars are already full. But you could carpool together along with any others who RSVP before Saturday. From there we will drive together to Coney Island.

Hi All, just joined Shutter-Buds and first heard of the Mermaid parade 2 weeks ago during another meet-up shoot - yes I was living under rock. I think it will be cool to join in though. Home is Danbury, CT so I am interested to car pool. Any brilliant tips for a newbie?

    June 17, 2013

  • Sue F.

Update: At the moment, we have 4 carpools. Steve is taking Kerry and Carol G. Lance is taking Sue K., Janet, and Gene. Sanjeev is taking Marla and Massimo. I will pick up Laura and Carol K-N at Panera in Newington and go to the Exit 66 commuter lot of the Wilbur Cross to meet Harry. Any others looking to carpool should meet there and we'll try to consolidate. Steve, could you also take Kathy Payne? I suspect Richard may go on his own? We have NOT heard from Kathleen, Melissa, Debbie, or Bonnie. If they aren't going, hen I believe we are all set! The 4 carpools will meet at the Exit 41 commuter lot in Westport (route 33.) at 7:45 and we'll head for Coney Island. (Details tonight. sorry. Busy weekend.)

I'd like to go Saturday, but don't want to drive. Is there room in any of the cars for an extra person?

    June 16, 2013

  • Sue F.

I will be at the Exit 66 (Wallingford) commuter lot on the Wilbur Cross Parkway at 6:50 am Sat. June 22 to pick up Harry and anyone else. Laura, I'll e-mail you about place closer to Hartford to meet. If anyone else is going with us and we haven't heard from you yet, you can meet us at Exit 66 and we'll get organized. ALL CARS WILL MEET to form the "Caravan to Coney Is" at Exit 41 (route 33) off the Wilbur Cross Parkway in Westport at 7:45. I'll post the FINAL DETAILS packet this weekend. ETA on Surf Avenue to park no later than 9:30.

    June 15, 2013

Who else is in the MA/north of Hartford group?

    June 11, 2013

    • Sue F.

Laura, I don't think any MA people are going except Richard who usually goes on his own. If you can get to Newington, CT, you can ride with me!

      June 13, 2013

    • Laura

I can do that! After trying to get around Boston last week I really don't want to drive in New York, smile!

      June 13, 2013

  • Lance J.

Actually, upon seeing the pictures from last year, Cathy & Becca have backed out, leaving me solo. I'm still "in". I'd still prefer to drive and would be willing to give 3 others a ride.

    1 · June 9, 2013

    • Gene S.

Hi Lance I might be interested in riding in with the 3 of you also. I am in Granby and would be going south on 91 to the Wilbur Cross.

      June 10, 2013

    • Lance J.

Yes to Sue K, Janet & Gene, you can ride with me.

      June 12, 2013

  • Harry L.

Sue, do you have space in your car? Plus, I'm going to spring for the pass so I can hang out "back stage," as it were. Really looking forward to it. Thanks!

    June 11, 2013

    • Sue F.

Yes, Harry. I can take (2) more people. The last two years, some of my best photos were from "behind the scenes," so I'd like to spend the whole parade hanging out in the staging area. The pass is $20 and can be bought online, but I wouldn't want to chance getting it mailed on time. We are arriving early and can buy the passes at the staging area. People can do that or opt to set up chairs early along Surf Ave., not far from our parking lot, and watch from there. We'll will all stay in touch and meet up later. When I verify two commuter lot exits, I will send the packet of info.

      June 12, 2013

    • Harry L.

Ok, I'll snare one of those spots. I agree about the pass.

      June 12, 2013

  • Peter C.

I overlooked a prior commitment and will not be able to attend this event.

    June 11, 2013

    • Sue F.

Really sorry you can't make it, Peter!!! See you soon, we hope!

      June 11, 2013

  • Sue F.

I will drive and meet carpoolers just beyond Meriden (I have to go check the exit #again) on the Wilbur Cross where we met up last year. Don't forget that Lance is leaving from Colchester and wouldn't want to go too far north out of his way. We are starting to have options. That's a good thing. Drivers so far: Steve, Lance, me. Any others?

    June 11, 2013

    • Marla Melchiore P.

      Sanji- you driving?

      June 11, 2013

    • Massimo N.

I contacted Sanjeev and he said yes, so the 3 of us will come down together again.

      2 · June 11, 2013

  • Sue F.

Discussion... for those who went with me one of the past two years - do you want to set up chairs again along Surf Ave. or get the $20 photographer passes and spend the time hanging out in the staging area where the people line up for the parade? The parade starts (1) hour earlier this year, BTW, at 1:00, so there's one hour less to kill.
    What are your thoughts?

    1 · June 9, 2013

    • Massimo N.

I definitely want to get the pass this year. If I'm not mistaken the pass also allows you to walk along the route. Standing in one spot is hard on my back after a while (and the harsh sun doesn't help), so this time I'd rather try to move around.

      June 11, 2013

    • Marla Melchiore P.

I had the pass last year and was great. There were areas that had trees so maybe there we can set up.

      June 11, 2013

  • Venu

I am afraid I will not be able to make it much as I want to. I will enjoy the your pics. Thanks.
