• Hiking at Big Shoals State Park
Come check out Florida's only Class III rapids while hiking! The famous Shoals run over a lime rock base and are part of Florida’s Cody Scarp; it’s a breathtaking site. When the water level on the Suwannee River is between 59 and 61 feet above mean sea level, the Big Shoals rapids earn a Class III Whitewater classification! Come out and join an energetic, challenging and extremely scenic hike at Big Shoals State Park, White Springs, Florida. The hike will be approximately 5-6 miles with some steep hills, views of the Suwanee River, wildlife, and some of the most beautifully manicured wooded trails in Florida. For those that want to carpool we will meet ant the McDonald's restaurant on Chaffee Road at 8:45 am and leaving at 9:00 am sharp. A hat, sunscreen, bug spray and plenty of water are highly recommended. Lunch will be decided upon after the hike should you desire. https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/big-shoals-state-park Event Leader: Mike Miller -[masked] Fees: $4 per vehicle. • Julington-Durbin Preserve Hike
Saturday 12/1/2018, 9:00 am, Julington-Durbin Preserve: Length of hike: 6.2 miles Since parking is limited at the Preserve, let's meet at Publix on Old St. Augustine Road and Bartram Park Blvd. At 8:30. We can leave a few cars in the parking lot and carpool. Also, since there are no bathroom facilities at the Preserve, it is suggested to use the facilities at Publix before the hike. Come join us for a fun hike. The Julington-Durbin Preserve is located on a peninsula formed at the confluence of Julington and Durbin creeks, and has approximately nine miles of shoreline along the two creeks. The peninsula is a long sandy ridge that grades into floodplain swamp and marsh along the creeks’ shores. Natural communities consist of sandhill along the higher areas near the center of the peninsula and flatwoods at the lower elevations. The preserve contains extensive floodplain wetlands, providing water quality and floodplain protection for both creeks and the St. Johns River. Wildlife viewing: Known wildlife at the preserve include bald eagle, osprey, gopher tortoise, bobcat, turkey, deer and numerous species of wading and songbirds. Manatees seasonally swim in both sides of the creeks. 13200 Bartram Park Blvd From Old St. Augustine Road in Bartram Park, go south on Bartram Park Blvd. for about 0.7 mile. Entrance to the trailhead is on the right. The address is 13200 Bartram Park Blvd. After the hike, we can go to a late lunch at Zoe’s Kitchen. Bring bug spray, sun block, and water.
