Sat-Sun, March 2-3, Kayaking and Hiking at Crooked River State Park: We will kayak Saturday morning at 11:30 am to catch the tides (both coming and going) to Harriett’s Bluff, a 6.3 mile round-trip. Sunday morning we will kayak at 9:30 am to Cherry Point, a 4 mile round-trip. This should take us 3-4 hours. Meet at the Crooked River State Park (http://www.gastateparks.org/info/crookriv/) [masked]) boat ramp at 10:30 am on Saturday and/or 8:30 am on Sunday.
Due to the area we will be kayaking from, I strongly recommend the use of a touring style kayak (sit-in for flat water) because of strong tide currents. The degree of difficulty can be moderate to hard depending on your skill level and keeping up with the group. Tides come into play so we must stick to a time table or suffer “the wrath of the tides.” There are 4 miles of nature trails with great scenery and wildlife so bring water/bug spray/snacks for a stop-over break on the paddling trip.
Kayaks can be rented by the day or for both days. You can contact Up the Creek Xpeditions (http://upthecreekx.com/) at[masked] or[masked]-4327. Cost is $40 a day ($80 for 2 days), plus a $10 fee for drop- off and pick-up. There is high demand for kayak rentals in March, so please call to reserve ASAP. If no kayaks are available, you can rent locally in Jacksonville and transport the kayak yourself.
Crooked River State Park, 6222 Charlie Smith Sr. Highway, St. Marys, GA 31558 is approximately an hour north of Jacksonville. From I-95 North take Exit 1, turn right (east) on St. Marys Road (toward Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay), turn left (north) onto Charlie Smith Sr Hwy. Once you pass the A BIG WHEEL RV PARK you will come to a split in road, take a right on still Charlie Smith Sr Hwy for .3 mile then turn at 1st right, go 470 ft turn right, go .6 mile then turn left into park.
