Camping, Hiking and Kayaking at Stephen C. Foster State Park, Fargo, GA

Fri 10/25-10/27, Camping, Hiking and Kayaking at Stephen C. Foster State Park, Fargo, GA: Come join us for a fun filled camping weekend. We will meet at the McDonalds, I-10 & Chaffee Rd. (705 Chaffee Road, 32221) at 6:00pm, Friday.

Camping is available in the park.  You can have 2 tents per site.  Call to reserve your camp site.  Ask for location close to the Sidetrackers group.  The campsites are about $28 per site and can accommodate 2 tents with as many people as you can fit in the tent.  I will only reserve a couple of campsites and add more if necessary.  Call[masked] to make your reservation and leave deposit.

http://www.floridastateparks.org/stephenfoster/default.cfm

We will kayak Saturday and Sunday and rentals are available at the park.  Kayak rental fees are for 8 hours; a single is $30 and a tandem is $35.  However, rental fees will be less for a 4 hour paddle.

The kayak paddle is considered easy to moderate as the water levels are high and the points of interest are about 2-3 miles.  If you do not want to paddle, you can rent The Kayak Boat for the day for $75. Up to five people can fit in the Jon boat.  There are also guided paddle tours available. Victor will be able to provide more information regarding the Kayak Boat.

There is a park guided tour in the morning and evening for $20 a person.  We will be doing a haunted ghost tour/boat ride/hike in the evening to Billie’s Island for $25 a person.  There are also free hiking trails in the park.  Call[masked] to secure your spot for the tours.  We will coordinate meals and a group dinner once we confirm RSVP’s.

From the McDonald’s meet up site: The distance to the park is approximately 100 miles and will take 1 hour 45+ minutes.

Leader: Vic C. [masked].

Hey Vic. I'm heading up shortly. Don't look for me at McDonalds. Try my cell when you get close - I don't know if we'll have service up there or not. If I don't hear from you, I'll be looking for you around 8 or so. Safe trip, everyone.

Since I can't canoe on an empty stomach, I'll be making eggs and stuff for Saturday breakfast. They'll be plenty for anyone who is interested in joining me. There will be ham, bacon and omelet fixin's. If someone lends me another stove burner, we can have coffee, too. Be up and ready for breakfast by 8 AM, I'm not running an all-morning restaurant. lol

That sounds great, Donna, thanks! I've got coffee, milk and splenda. If anyone wants real sugar for their coffee, bring it along.

Dee you have everything you need , also have half a campsite to split

    October 24, 2013

  • Ken H

Hi Dee, I have an extra tent and air mattress. You'll need a sleeping bag or blankets/pillows and probably a flashlight. I think Vic has a place on his site you can pitch the tent. Dog are allowed but the rules are strict, see this - http://gastateparks.org/StephenCFoster - if you go kayaking with us you'll have to decide what to do with your dog. I'm off Friday, too, and I'm going up mid-day. If you want to go up earlier with me than the others you're welcome to do that or you can car-train with the others at 6 pm. Let us know what else you're thinking, we'll try to make it work for you.

    October 23, 2013

    • Ken H

There are gators, snakes and bears. That is the issue w/ bringing a dog; they get attacked. Read about that on the website before making a decision. You should probably call the park ranger and ask specifically about the danger for dogs -[masked]-5274. Tell him you are tent camping - I don't know if that matters but he'll know. You'll have to bring food, there isn't any near the camp. You'll need a cooler for that. Its supposed to be nice this weekend but it will be in 40s at night so bring something warm to wear and an extra pair of sneakers in case one gets wet. You'll need a towel, toiletries, bug spray. If you decide to come I'll think harder about what else you should bring, but that's most of it. And we'll help you set up the tent.

When I camped there with my dog he slept in the tent untill he wouldn't sleep then he went to the truck. Shortly thereafter we were visited by the raccoon the dog was fussing about......in the tent ........................ When we went out in the canoe the dog stayed in his cage in the screen room of the tent. Cool enough and he was crate trained so he didn't bark........most of the time. ...........You would not want to take gator bait, aka your dog, near the water.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to go on this great camping trip. I sure hate to miss out on the fun.

Looks like the government turned the lights back on :-) The warning that the swamp is off-limits has been removed from the park website. I'm going to reserve a campsite. If anyone wants to share the site to save some money let me know. Alligators, here I come!

    October 17, 2013

  • vic c.

OK everybody hang loose for the park to open to full status and I talked to Park Ranger and on cabin rentals you are good if you have to cancel reservation with no penalty

    October 16, 2013

  • Ken H

Sounds good, Vic. I checked the park website and saw if you already made a reservation you can get all but $10 of your deposit back if you cancel 3 days before. So if we decide by Monday what we're doing, everyone should be able to get their deposit back.

    October 15, 2013

  • vic c.

If it looks like a no go for swamp , we can try for another spot that's not government controlled

    October 15, 2013

  • vic c.

I quests we may all be maybe's ,we see if the government gets their act together

    October 15, 2013

  • Ken H

Hey all, I'm gonna switch my RSVP to a 'maybe'. I talked to a park ranger today and was told that while the campgrounds are open, because of the Federal government shutdown, hiking and kayaking in the swamp is not allowed. Since I want to kayak the swamp, I'm going to wait and see if the gov re-opens before next weekend to decide whether to come or not.

    October 15, 2013

  • Ken H

Hi Donna, I think you will be OK without a lesson. Vic knows a lot about it and can give you pointers. I've done a little kayaking (but a lot of canoeing) and I think its pretty simple. When we get there and you're uncomfortable about going it alone, I'll be happy to rent a 2 seat kayak and paddle with you. (I'm all for saving $12 :-). Or if we get another person who is hesitant about it, the 3 of us can rent the paddle boat.

    October 13, 2013

    • Ken H

That's good for me, too. When Vic leaves me far behind as he usually does; this time I can say "It was Donna's fault, she was a beginner and I slowed down for her." But I still need an excuse for why he can out-hike me. lol. See you up there.

      October 13, 2013

  • Ken H

Hey Vic, just checking in to see what is up with this. It turns out I have something for that Sunday afternoon, so I'm thinking about going up Friday after lunch and leaving Sunday morning. Did you reserve campsites for Fri & Sat or should I call for one? Let me know what you're thinking about meals - Sat breakfast? dinner?

    October 11, 2013

  • vic c.

I hope more folks can come out for this ,should be interesting and maybe we can go for the Georgia Park Paddling club , that's 6 state parks and a total of 24 miles paddled and I know a few of us have paddled Crooked River state park early this year.

My class reunion is that weekend, or I would be there. The Swamp is one of my favorite places with its beauty and serenity. Don't miss this event without a good reason.

I am so sad I have to work that weekend. Have a great time!
