• Crystal River Kayak/Paddle
Sidetrackers, its time to paddle some waters off the gulf. Crystal River is a spring fed river so it is very clear and the chances of seeing manatee's coming into the river for the winter months are very good. We will put in at Crystal River Preserve State Park. This will be a long day, about a 2.5 hour drive from the meeting location and 2.5 hours back after 3 plus hours of kayaking, so be smart and plan on overnighting. We will try to be in the water as soon as possible to take advantage of the low tide before it switches to high tide for a easy paddle back to launch area. If you spend the night, we can kayak or hike a different location on our way back to Jacksonville. There are quite a few hotels with rooms available and I'm considering a Vrbo house that has 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms which would come to $60 a person. If we go that route, I will need money as soon as possible. This is the property listing in Vrbo: http://www.vrbo.com , #[masked]ha. Feel free to get your own accommodations. We will meet at McDonald's off Chaffee Road just off Interstate 10, west of I-295 around 8 am and hopefully on the road by 8:15 am. I have tried to locate kayak outfitters to drop off kayak rentals to put in area but no one does that so you will either bring your own or rent one in Jacksonville and then transport it to the event. To join me in the house, please contact me ASAP by leave a message at[masked] (Vic) and we can work out details on hotel, rentals and transportation. • Bike Ride - Fleming Island to Green Cove Springs
We will meet in the parking lot by MOJO BBQ at 9am (and be leaving at 9:15am) - next to Mellow Mushroom. (1810 Town center Blvd Fleming Island). Please be on time to sign the Sidetracker waiver so we can start on time. I recommend everyone use bike helmets and bring plenty of water. This trail goes north and south on US-17 but we will head south to Green Cove Springs for approximately 9 miles and return back to Mellow Mushroom. This trail has a dense tree canopy which shelters much of the trail. The trail is also be shared by runners. This trail does cross the road twice at intersections - so stop, look and observe the traffic law's on right of way. Please park your vehicles in the big parking lot by MOJO BBQ as a courtesy to Mellow Mushroom customers. Thanks. At our half way destination point – Spring Park Coffee (328 Ferris Street Green Cove Springs) we will take a 5 minute break. From there we will ride out to the Saint Johns Green Cove Springs pier. The ride takes 2 hours. There is a limit of 20 people. We can decide where we might like to go to lunch after the ride. • Jekyll Island Kayak/Biking and Shark Tooth Hunt
OK, its time to go and do some kayaking and biking and maybe find a few prehistoric shark teeth - all in the same day! So bring your big boy or big girl shorts and go for a full day of adventure. I'm planning this outing around the tides so we will bike for the first hour, possibly 90 minutes. The biking will be at your own pace and wherever you wish to ride but I recommend a mountain, hybrid or a road bike with big wide tires. There are bike rentals at Jekyll Wheels on the island if you do not wish to bring a bike since some folks might be bringing a kayak. If you wish to rent a kayak or paddle board, there is Turtle Tides Jekyll. They have kayak rentals and tours available for 4 hours or you can do the tour for 2 hours with kayak included. I plan on kayaking around 2 to 2.5 hours. The kayaking will start after the biking which should be around noon. Low tide conditions that we need will occur so plan on 2 hours on the water and that will include hunting for fossils on Sharktooth Beach. After all this, I plan on getting a bite to eat at any of the several restaurants nearby on the island. Please make sure that if you RSVP yes, and then decide not to go, CHANGE YOUR RSVP TO NO on the MeetUp list so you don't get a no show. PLEASE ALSO cancel any reservations you make for kayaks or bikes if you change your mind so they don't lose out on money. This is a courtesy to the trip leader as well as the vendors that you requested a kayak, bike, etc. Leader: Vic Corrales[masked] Meet at Hardee's between 8:15am and 8:30am. • Cumberland Island Hike
Hike four miles of beautiful Cumberland Island that's different and unforgettable. Enjoy the wild horses, maritime forests, interior wetlands, historic districts, the beautiful unspoiled and undeveloped beaches. You must make your own Cumberland Island Ferry Reservations the cost for round trip is $28.00 + tax's. The ferry leaves St. Marys at 11:45 am; so please arrive no later than 11:15 am and check in at the Cumberland Island Visitor's Center located at 100 W St Marys Street. There also is an admission to the island itself with the Park Service and that cost is $10.00 per person. We will return to St Marys via the 4:45 pm ferry and you can head home or stay in the town for dinner. Please bring a picnic lunch that we will eat once we get to the island. A hat, sunscreen and bug spray are also highly recommended. Also, bring a bathing suit, as swimming is an option on the island; it should be a nice day and the water will still be warm and will feel so good after hiking! St Marys, GA, is only 40 miles north of Jacksonville. To get to the visitor’s center, take I-95 north into Georgia exit 1 and turn right onto St Marys Rd. In three miles take the GA-40 exit and then turn left onto GA-40 East. Follow this road 4+ miles towards town. You will have to park before the ferry location due to the festival road closures. Once you park, walk into town and turn right onto West St Marys St. The ferry location is just a few hundred yards ahead on the left. If you are interested in carpooling, please communicate your suggestions on the Meet Up website.
