Bonny Doon Ecological Preserve, 9 miles, 2,000 elevation gain

Join me on a fast-paced, strenuous hike through an area that is off the beaten track -- the Bonny Doon Ecological Preserve. The area was severely burned by a fire in 2008 and the moon rock area remains closed. However, there are trails throughout the open area that are fun to explore. Most trails are unmarked so have an adventurous spirit. We begin by hiking on sandy trails and skirt the closed moon rocks before heading down to, and across, Laguna Creek.  The trails head down through oak forest to redwoods and then up towards Empire Grade Road we pass through chaparral with brief peeks at the ocean. These trails are not maintained so be prepared to stay together.  Wear hiking boots, layered clothes.  Bring water, snacks, and lunch.  If you have not hiked with me email me with questions.

Rain cancels hike. Bring layered clothing, lunch, water. No water or bathroom at parking lot. No host carpool at Los Gatos Unlimited Parking Lot at 8:30. Other carpools may be arranged later.  Listed with the Black Mountain Hiking Section and Sierra Singles.

Sparky, sorry for the late cancellation, but I've been sick (apparently with wishful thinking). This hike will be too much for me tomorrow. Catch ya' next time.

One last email to prepare everyone for the hike tomorrow. Remember that the parking location is at the OLD Bonny Doon Fire Station on Martin Road. Second, wear good hiking shoes/boots because some of the trails will be steep and footing could be a little tricky. Bring hiking poles if you have them.
Unlike other Sierra Club hikes, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SIGN OUT AND HIKE BACK ON YOUR OWN. Please be prepared to hike the entire hike. There are no trail signs on any of these trails and there are numerous trails intersecting. We pretty much stick together on this hike, waiting at EVERY intersection for the group to catch up. No dogs are allowed on the hike. There will be a carpool at the Los Gatos Unlimited Parking Lot at 8:30 am. See the Loma Prieta Sierra Club website for details on how to locate it. Bring food for lunch and prepare for a warm day. I look forward to meeting some new folks and sharing this unusual hike with you all. Email me with questions.

Hi Sparky. What is the intersection or address for the Los Gatos Unlimited Parking?

      January 17, 2014

    • Sparky

Take highway 9 exit off highway 17 and go a block or two and driveway is on right. Directions on how to get there is on LP Sierra Club website page for carpool sites.
