Snowshoe Hike in Tahoe Meadows out-n-back 2 mi. on Tahoe Rim Trail (4 mi. total)

Note: The weather is only good for doing a snowshoe hike on Saturday (I had hoped to schedule this for Sunday).  You'll be back from this hike in time to change or get ready for the Christmas Sierra Club party at Bartley Ranch this evening.

Until I get a co-lead, attendance is limited to 10 people.  Once I get a co-lead, I'll change it to 20.

Meet up at 8:45 am (for signup, we will leave Starbucks on Wedge and Mt. Rose (Raley's Shopping Center) 5 minutes later and carpool/caravan to Tahoe Meadows Parking Strip (South end --GPS coordinates,[masked], [masked], and where Mt. Rose Hwy intersects with Incline Lake Road).  We should be on the trail around 9:30 am then.

Description: Enjoy a Saturday morning snowshoe hike through the snow (there was 2 feet of snow there last Sunday and people were snowshoeing, I snowshoed on last Sunday).  We will hike East about 1.75 miles on the Tahoe Rim Trail and then hike back (there is a short cut back we can take that will give us different scenery.  Budget about 4 to 4.5 hours at Tahoe Meadows and the time to drive to/from.  We will have a great view overlooking Lake Tahoe at points of the hike.

This is a snowshoe hike, bring snowshoes, hiking poles (or ski poles), be sure your feet are warm, insulated winter hiking boots and two pairs of socks are recommended.  Gloves and Beanie and be able to alter your layers (add or subtract) without getting too cold or too warm.  Water, warm clothing (hat/gloves), and a lunch (and even an added snack) are a must.  Many people after the first hour, when we get to the Chickadee Ridge want a snack there.

Do not RSVP Yes if you do not have snowshoes or do not intend to rent them.

UPDATE: If you have never hiked in snowshoes but have them (or are renting or borrowing them), come along, it is so easy to learn, you'll be comfortable within 5 minutes of instruction.

RATING: Snowshoe hikes on an uphill in deep snow is intense cardio, especially the 2nd half hour of the hike (which will be the hardest part of the hike).  We will take several short breaks but if you are out of cardio shape, you'll want to quit just after one mile.  Please only sign up if you have good cardio and good aerobic stamina.  

Difficulty level: Aside from the cardio and aerobic issue (see above), the rating of the hike is moderate (snowshoe hiking should be minimally rated as moderate because of the extra weight added to your feet).  For experienced snowshoe hikers, it will be considered easy.  We will be moving at about a mile per hour pace.

Check this web page before you leave for the hike Saturday morning.  If weather changes, cancellation can happen.

It is flat but at ELEVATION - over 8,000 ft so please keep this in mind if you have heart/lung problems.

Sign-in and liability waiver required.  We ask a $1 donation to our outings leader training fund.  Membership in the Sierra Club is NOT a requirement to participate in any of our hikes.

    There will be very little wind tomorrow, zero chance of precipitation but it will be cold, be ready to handle temps between 12-25 degrees the range of temps forecasted at Ski Mt. Rose tomorrow here:

    Bring a lunch and a snack, in the exertion we'll be doing you'll get hungry, the food provides warmth.

    Hi. Just fyi. I went yesterday & there was plenty of snow! If weather & wind are good Sat, i will go bike riding, but if not, I will meet the group at the trailhead & will rsvp yes if I am going.
