Edge Intelligence for Smart Traffic Systems and Autonomous Vehicles
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) generate floods of valuable real-time data about vehicles, pedestrians, and public infrastructure. Hidden insights have the potential to inform autonomous vehicles, ensure public safety, optimize traffic flows, conserve energy, and significantly reduce infrastructure operating costs. But finding those insights remains a huge challenge. Complex, big-data focused, cloud-hosted IOT solutions are inflexible and unsuited for processing real-time data. Edge computing paired with local, self-training machine learning can cost-effectively filter and analyse massive volumes of streaming sensor data from transportation infrastructure and other connected systems, and predict future conditions. This talk describes a system that integrates edge intelligence with existing Intelligent Transportation Systems to affordably transform edge data into real-time, automatically learned insights about traffic flows, system performance, and maintenance. Insights and predictions are delivered from a cloud API. In this session, you will learn how: • Commodity edge hardware can be used to cost-effectively process massive volumes of real-time city data at the edge to power rich, real-time experiences • Complex, local system behaviors can be automatically captured in a self-training ML framework that runs at the edge, while delivering insights to consumers and businesses via API • Local edge intelligence can easily integrate with autonomous vehicles, traffic infrastructure, and public services (TMS, emergency response, etc.) to deliver real-time insights for a fraction of the cost of slower cloud-based solutions Presenter: Chris Sachs is a co-founder and Lead Architect of SWIM Inc. Chris has developed innovative, real-time solutions for some of the most challenging data use cases around the world. Northern California has emerged as a hotbed for automotive activity: enthusiasts and practitioners, hobbyists and seasoned industry veterans from both near and far, with all levels of experience, are invited to collaborate on the future of vehicles, transportation, and mobility, and to reflect on the societal and infrastructure implications of intelligent transportation systems. All subjects are of interest: autonomy and self-driving vehicles, safety, fuel-efficiency, innovative enabling applications, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), connected car, CANBus, OBD2, in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) along with all sorts of vehicles and vehicle aggregates: fleet vehicles, trucks, farming equipment, heavy machinery, marine and aviation applications. Although open source is in our Meetup name anyone involved in business, policy or regulatory aspects of transportation are heartily invited too.
