"We think that the existing applications are just beginning to explore the possibilities of open vehicle data, and that OBD diagnostic data and other sources of vehicle data have the potential to power significant improvements in vehicle efficiency and safety. To demonstrate our excitement for the potential of vehicle data for entrepreneurs and automotive enthusiasts, the Vehicle Technologies Program is sponsoring $50,000 IN PRIZES FOR THE BEST BUSINESS PLANS AND PRODUCTS that can improve safety and fuel efficiency through technology innovation. THE DEADLINE FOR THE FIRST PHASE OF THE COMPETITION IS JANUARY 15, 2013; if you are interested in this competition, please register today for the Apps for Vehicles Challenge. The best plans and products will be selected for phase two of the competition, and the teams will have the opportunity to work with the Energy Department and private sector automotive experts to put their app design into action."

  5. Joe Justice of Team Wikispeed is a remarkably inspiring leader in
of an impressive open-hardware car effort:

    http://www.infoq.com/presentations/SDEC12-Keynote

Joe has promised that he will visit us and give a presentation if someone can provide him with lodging for the night.    Thinking that Joe might not want to sleep on my floor in between my twin heap of bicycle parts and bricked gadgets, I thought I would ask the group if anyone might be willing to put Joe up one night in April or May and transport him to whatever meeting locale we select.
  6. Connected In-Vehicle Infotainment Global Summit California 2013

Successfully Applying Connected Apps, Features & Experiences To The Automotive Environment

    http://www.in-vehicle-infotainment.com/

    February 12-13, 2013 San Francisco

The agenda already features an impressive list of speakers.    I attended the first "Connected IVI Summit" in London in September and found it very valuable.
  7. SVAOS discussion board available here:

  9. Call for Volunteers

Does anyone want to be group photographer, wikimaster, luncheon or happy-hour organizer?   Would anyone who will be attending CES like to prepare a brief reportand post afterward?    How about pushing SVAOS content to Twitter or creating a Google+ group?   How about creating a group calendar external to meetup.com or an events RSS feed?

Please feel free to suggest speakers and venues as well.

Thanks for all your enthusiasm and participation in 2012.   I look forward to an even better 2013.
  10. Class on Controller Area Network and OBDII?

I'm considering preparing a half-day class on Controller Area Network and OBDII protocols, security, demo and how-to.   Possibly I would sell scantools at cost in association with the class, for which there would be a fee.   You can see some of my previous work with open-source approaches to CAN hacking here:  http://she-devel.com/Mazda3_Controller_Area_Network_Experimentation.html    Please indicate to me if you would consider enrolling in such a class, and if there are enough responses, I will make it happen.
