Kick-off Meeting

For our first meeting, I'm suggesting that we start with a couple of older canonical papers, one from industry and one from academia:

1) Estimating the Number of Unseen Species (How many words did Shakespeare Know?) by Bradley Efron and Ronald Thisted of Stanford University Biostatistics Dept., July 1975

http://statistics.stanford.edu/~ckirby/techreports/BIO/BIO%2009.pdf

2) MapReduce: Simplified Data Processing on Large Clusters by Jeffrey Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat of Google, December 2004

http://static.googleusercontent.com/external_content/untrusted_dlcp/research.google.com/en/us/archive/mapreduce-osdi04.pdf

We should also discuss how we want to choose papers for future meetings at the first meetup.

I hope you are able to join us!

Think this is a useful paper on boosted regression trees: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1365-2656.2008.01390.x/full

Great idea for a meetup! Coincidentally I read the Dean/Ghemawat paper a few weeks ago. I cannot make the kick-off meeting because I will be at the SIGGRAPH conference that week (plus it is already oversubscribed) but look forward to joining you in the future.

My two cents - I suggest we go in a systematic way - Data Sourcing, Data Preparation, Exploratory Data Analysis etc.. so that we build up a thread.
