Building Cross Platform Mobile Native App + Mobile Web: How LinkedIn Does It

Agenda

7:00pm Dinner 7:30pm Presentation 8:45pm Q&A 9:00pm Giveaway

Summary:

Development of almost any software has some aspect of Design, Implementation, Testing and Deployment. When working on mobile software, the differences in platforms make it a bit more difficult to navigate these stages of product development. In this talk, I’ll go over some strategies I have learned building mobile platforms (PalmOS, WebOS), mobile devices(Treo, Pre) and now mobile applications(LinkedIn) to help you understand some of the nuances of mobile product development. At the end, you should have a clear model for how to approach cross platform mobile Design, Implementation, Testing and Deployment and learn how LinkedIn navigates the cross platform mobile world.

Speaker:

Kiran Prasad, Mobile Lead at Linkedin

Working on mobile products for over 10 years have given Kiran Prasad a unique perspective on the growth of mobile. He led ground breaking products like the PalmOS Treo 600, Windows Mobile Treo 700w and most recently application development for Palm WebOS. Working on LinkedIn's Mobile products, Kiran uses a combination of web based and native client technologies with light server technologies like Node.js to build stunning and simple user experiences.

I found the presentation very informative and the presenter was quite knowledgeable. Kiran is a good communicator and answers questions clearly and succinctly. This was a very useful meetup.

Karin gave a very cogent and enlightening presentation on LinkedIn's software architecture for their Mobile Apps. Here's a link to his slidedeck for those who couldn't attend: http://www.slideshare.net/phegaro/linkedin-mobile-how-do-we-do-it. Thanks Bess for organizing another great event!

@sudhir Could you bring your HD camcorder equipment? So we could show you what you need to setup if you have to video for future events?

    April 23, 2012

  • Bess H.

@Kenji Can we confirm your coming to record video and deliver video after the event?

    April 23, 2012

  • Bess H.

@Kenji There is no need to record the announcement. Our event is usu more than an hour. Q&A tends to be more than 15min closer to 30min due to our extreme technical members. It's hard to capture good audio on Q&A. We may not include Q&A portion on video. Our video will be hosted in our SVWB Channel on video platform. If you could provide 1080p HD video in .mov or .avi after event, I could push them to watching platform. I can provide you with cover slide and end credit slide for video.

@Kenji @Sudhir This is my proposal. I suggest Kenji to take the lead in recording this event b/c he has the experience and video / audio equipment. I suggest Sudhir to be Kenji's assistance so you could learn how to record and setup audio and video. Kenji could record this event. There will be other events where Kenji couldn't attend or record. Sudhir could fill in the role. Once everyone is comfortable we could rotate the video recording.

Bess, I can also do the video recording if need be. I am a pro at this stuff (use to run a 300 person video production group), so if @Sudhir doesn't feel comfortable doing it I can. I have an HD camera setup, and pro audio setup I can bring along for recording. Please make sure the speaker is good with it being recorded and put online.

@Sudhir Thank you for your volunteering. Please assign yourself to this task - video recording. I'm actually know everything about video recording and editing but I don't have the bandwidth. I can show and train you. Please consider getting external microphone and extra long line for audio. Benny Ng our Hurricane Electric sponsor would help you to connect your microphone to their mixer audio line.

Thank you, Bess, for all your hard work in making this meetup great! You're awesome!

Sorry again we don't have any extra volunteers to do any extra like recording video. I manage to get good speakers and publishers to sponsor books to give away. That's about the spare time I could squeeze in to run this group.
