SQL Server Performance Warehouse Using the SSAS Tabular Model

Speaker: Joel Champagne of SQL Hero

What if you could take performance data related to SQL Server (and non-SQL Server sources as well) and collect it into a data warehouse that's implemented using the SQL 2012 SSAS Tabular Model?  You could build an infinite number of reports using tools such as Excel 2010+.  You could also consolidate different kinds of metrics and define your own KPI's.

Joel will show us how to do it with SQL-Hero. You'll understand the concepts involved so you can roll your own solutions, or you'll see enough to get up-and-running quickly if you choose to use SQL-Hero.  You'll also learn about SSAS, PowerPivot and DAX; plus he'll touch on SQL Server Extended Events and some handy DMV queries.

You'll learn:

  • About the BISM Tabular Model, its relation to PowerPivot, DAX, and why the tabular model is a good choice for many BI solutions
  • A variety of considerations, choices & trade-offs available in designing a performance data warehouse
  • How to build other BI solutions of your own, not just those for performance reporting!

Joel Champagne helps clients deliver large business solutions, mostly using .NET technologies, SQL Server, SSAS and SSRS. His specialty is in the SQL space, in particular data modeling and BI, as well as application frameworks and architecture. His company's flagship product, SQL-Hero, codifies many of daily consulting tasks including code generation, tracing, reporting, and more.
