Real Context Awareness: Secure Swarm Sensing, Ad Hoc Biomimicry, and Owning Your Personal Cloud

“Mobile Context Awareness” (CA) currently describes the ability to integrate a phone’s GPS location with events you put on its calendar. That definition is minimal and trivializes the impact CA will have on daily life.

Full-on Context Awareness requires difficult steps that are not in current use. They include constant, integrated analytics of your news feeds with data from more sensors that are always-on, including orientation, motion, air sampling, spatial audio, and 3D image capture.  

Still more data streams will come in laterally from your phone’s constant, transient participation in local ad hoc mesh networks, the emergence of which will expand sensing range far beyond single-device limits.

To accomplish the necessary integration and prioritization of CA, powerful approaches are emerging based on architectures that mimic how other social species communicate, take in, and organize immense quantities of sensory stimuli and turn them into decisions (biomimicry).

Finally, such thorough data gathering forces questions of who owns data and who will profit from it; Clark Dodsworth will discuss some of the alternatives.

Clark Dodsworth, founder of Osage Associates, contextual mobile consulting

Clark Dodsworth does strategy and product development for interactive products, services, and experiences based on human-centered design. Current work: mobile context awareness, enterprise data integrity, and 4D theme park attractions.

In 2007, Clark defined the hyperpersonalized Augmented Reality entertainment experience of 2013 for Dubailand theme parks — on smartphones. It integrates next-gen GPS, RFID, predictive analytics, machine vision, machine learning, and context. The tech and theme park implementations are conforming to the arcs he charted.   

Clark co-authored the original “Ambient Intelligence” strategy for Philips in 1998 to leverage ubicomp and the impending centrality of smartphones and sensors. His work for Philips included Live Wall, a large videophone. Clark has done extensive patent assessment for IBM and was contributing editor for the book, "Digital Illusion: Entertaining the Future with High Technology.” Before that he was Director of Content for the first nationwide, mobile, location-aware, interactive retail network.

Clark contributes to the ISMAR International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality, the Entertainment Technology Center Press at Carnegie Mellon, SIGGRAPH, eComm, and IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications.
