Our October movie is campy, sexy and nostalgic. For those of you who are old enough to remember the early 60s, you'll recall the magazine, Physique Pictorial. When I first saw it on a news rack (at 16?) it was OMG life-changing! Page after page of photos of musclemen in nothing but posing straps!
(Village Voice critic) "The story, stranger than fiction, centers on gay cult photographer and entrepreneur Robert Mizer and his Athletic Model Guild. The models, including former Warhol beauty Joe Dallesandro and the perennially pumped-up Jack LaLanne, provide soulful and honest moments. 'Beefcake' has real charm and as a tribute to Mizer it's both appropriately complicated and poignantly sexy."
The movie is a hybrid of documentary interviews and campy re-enactments. (The trailer below doesn't deal with the documentary interviews - but they're just as entertaining -and sexual- as the re-enactments.) At our screening we'll also show some of Mizer's campy short films which feature major amounts of frontal (but flaccid) nudity. As connoisseurs of Mizer's 'male art,' I'm sure you'll appreciate them(!)
