DESCRIPTION OF HIKE: Moderate-to-strenuous 10.7-mile loop with 2,700’ of elevation gain/loss.

The Zuma Ridge Trail (aka Zuma Ridge Motorway) is a wide dirt road that winds northwest along the ridge west of Zuma Canyon. The hike begins steadily (but not steeply) uphill for 2.9 miles along the mountain ridge. The views – including Zuma Beach, Point Dume, and the Pacific Ocean (and Channel Islands if the air quality is good) – steadily improve as elevation is gained. When we reach the junction of the Zuma Ridge Trail with the Zuma Edison Road we’ll head eastward 3.9 miles to the 0.7 mile-long Zuma Canyon Connector Trail on the east side of Zuma Canyon and then head south 1.3 miles on the Kanan-Edison Road. Then we’ll hike 1.2 miles west on the Ocean View Trail and complete our loop via the Ridge Canyon Access Trail (0.7 mile).

PREPAREDNESS: Bring 2-3 liters/quarts of water (or other suitable liquid) and lunch/snack. Wear appropriate footwear (preferably hiking boots) and be prepared for bright sunlight (sunglasses), heat (layers of clothing), and/or precipitation (rain gear). Hiking pole(s) and a camera might come in handy.

NOTE: At the beginning of each outing you will be required to read and sign a liability release form (a sign-in sheet).

Take Hwy 118 to the Madera Road exit in Simi Valley.

Head south 1.4 miles on Madera Road to its intersection with Royal Avenue (there’s a traffic light at the intersection).

Turn left (east) onto Royal Avenue and then immediately turn left into the first driveway (which leads into a strip mall) and park near the Donut Delite store.

Wait for the hiking leader(s).

DIRECTIONS TO THE TRAILHEAD (for anyone who intends to meet us at the trailhead) – NOTE: You should be in the parking lot (see below) by 8:45 a.m.

Head southwest on Madera Road; drive to 3.2 miles to Highway 23.

Head south (toward Thousand Oaks) on Highway 23; drive 4.5 miles to Highway 101.

Head east (toward L.A.) on Highway 101; drive 6.25 miles to Kanan Road.

Head south (toward the ocean) on Kanan Road; drive 12.5 miles to Pacific Coast Highway (Hwy 1).

Turn right (west) on Pacific Coast Highway (Hwy 1) and drive 1.0 mile to Busch Drive.

Turn right (north) on Busch Drive and drive 1.3 miles to the dirt parking lot at the end of the road (on the right). NOTE: at 0.8 mile Merritt Drive joins Busch Drive.

Turn right into the parking lot, park your vehicle, and wait for the hiking leader(s).
