DESCRIPTION OF HIKE: Moderate two-part 6-mile hike with 935’ of elevation gain and 1,265’ of elevation loss (with a short vehicle shuttle).

NOTE: This hike was rescheduled from April 9th due to the rain storm that day.

PART ONE of our two-part hike – We’ll drive to the Circle X Ranch and drop off our shuttle vehicle(s); then we’ll carpool one (1) mile back up Yerba Buena Road to the Canyon View Trail trailhead (across Yerba Buena Road from the Sandstone Peak Trail trailhead). We’ll hike the Canyon View Trail to a connector trail which we’ll follow down to the Grotto Trail. After exploring The Grotto area, we’ll return along the Grotto Trail to the Circle X Ranch Ranger “Contact Station” and our shuttle vehicle(s).

PART TWO of our two-part hike – After retrieving our other vehicle(s), we’ll drive 1.6 miles northeast on Yerba Buena Road to an unsigned dirt parking area on the south/ocean side. We’ll start hiking along the dirt Yellow Hill Fire Road/trail near Triunfo Pass. We’ll hike in a counter-clockwise loop with an out-and-back spur that will take us to the ruins of the Triunfo Fire Lookout (2,658’) with 360-degree views of mountains and ocean; the remainder of the loop will be along a section of the Santa Monica Mountains Backbone Trail.

PREPAREDNESS: Bring 2-3 liters/quarts of water (or other suitable liquid) and lunch/snack. Wear appropriate footwear (preferably hiking boots) and be prepared for bright sunlight (sunglasses), heat (layers of clothing), and/or precipitation (rain gear). Hiking pole(s) and a camera might come in handy.

NOTE: At the beginning of each outing you will be required to read and sign a liability release form (a sign-in sheet).

DIRECTIONS TO THE CARPOOL LOCATION IN SIMI VALLEY:

Take Hwy 118 to the Madera Road exit in Simi Valley.

Head south 1.4 miles on Madera Road to its intersection with Royal Avenue (there’s a traffic light at the intersection).

Turn left (east) onto Royal Avenue and then immediately turn left into the first driveway (which leads into a strip mall) and park near the Donut Delite store.

Wait for the hiking leader(s).

NOTE: All participants must meet at the Simi Valley carpool location at the beginning of the outing to ensure that we take enough vehicles to facilitate the car shuttle that will enable us to hike one way [rather than an out-and-back hike].
