• Jeju Island has been selected a New 7 Wonders of Nature.

• Yongduam Rock – an unusual lava formation in the shape of a screaming dragon with its body soaked into the sea.

• Mysterious Road – to experience the phenomenon of going uphill with the engine off. Even with the engine on your vehicle turned off, you will still be able to ascend uphill along this famous Mysterious Road. Mysterious Road made its claim to fame in 1981, when a honeymooning couple witnessed a car in neutral gear crawl up the hill on which it had been idling. A gravity or magnetic hill is a place where a slight downhill slope appears to be an uphill slope due to the layout of the surrounding land, creating the optical illusion that water flows uphill or a car left out of gear will roll uphill.

• Teddy Bear Museum

• Non- Verbal Performance Nanta Show. South Korean non-verbal comedy show that incorporates the traditional samul nori rhythm. The show involves acrobatics, magic tricks, comedy, pantomime and audience participation. The unifying element throughout the musical is the use of traditional Korean samul nori music, which in this case in performed with improvised instruments, such as cutting boards, water canisters and kitchen knives. Nanta is the longest-running show in Korean history. It has been staged in 18 countries around the world.

• Lunch – Ginseng Chicken (Samgyetang), Dinner - Seafood Sashimi

Day 3 (Monday, 14th Oct): JEJU *‘Cherry Blossom Trails” at Jeju (seasonal)

• Seongsan Sunrise Peak (UNESCO World Heritage site) – a volcanic crater offering a splendid view of the coast. Seongsan Sunrise Peak rose from under the sea in a volcanic eruption over 100,000 years ago. There is a huge crater at the top of the peak. The crater is about 600m in diameter and 90m deep. It looks like a gigantic crown because of the 99 sharp rocks surrounding the crater. While the southeast and north sides are cliffs, the northwest side is a verdant grassy hill that is connected to the Seongsan Village. The ridge provides an ideal spot for walks and horse riding.

• Seongeup Folk Village – Designated as a Folklore Preservation Zone. Located at the foot of Mt Halla. It shows the unique culture of Jeju Island: the black lava rock walls, the straight but curvy alleys that block the wind, and the stone grandfather statues (Harubang), which have become a prime feature of the landscape. The local black-haired pigs and tongsi (pigsty / restroom) are especially well-known characteristics of Jeju folk culture. The Jeju black pork is said to be very nutritious. The trees that stand in the center of the village are also said to be more than hundreds of years old.

• Jeju Ice Museum

• Bucketlist Trick Art museum. 3D fun art.

• 360° 5D Fantasy World Show

• Dolharbang Park (Peach Park). Garden of stone dolls made of porous black volcanic rock. Dolharbang means “stone grandfather”.

• Horse Riding

• Breakfast – Hotel, Lunch – Jeju Black Pork BBQ, Dinner – Jeju Mackerel

As recently as the 1960′s Jeju’s black pigs used to feed on human waste. Nowadays the pigs are fed a conventional diet (waste-free), but many say this has negatively affected the taste.

Day 4 (Tuesday, 15th Oct): JEJU - GIMPO - GANGWON-DO

• Enjoy the colours of autumn at Chiaksan Mountain (seasonal)

• National Park: Chiaksan Mountain (means Pheasant Peak Mountain). Beautiful dense forests, mist-cloaked mountains, rushing rock-strewn rivers and wildlife.

Originally it was known as “Jeogaksan” but the name was changed to Chiaksan to reflect a local legend.

Many years ago, a man was hiking in Jeogaksan when he came upon a snake strangling a pheasant. The man felt sorry for the poor pheasant and killed the snake with an arrow.

Later that evening the man was searching for a place to rest and was invited by a woman to stay with her in her home. As the man was sleeping this woman transformed into a snake and revealed herself as the partner of the unlucky reptile the man had killed earlier that day.

This snake-woman coiled herself around the man and swore to crush him to death if the bell at Sangwonsa (a temple on Chiaksan) didn’t ring three times before morning. The man cried out in despair and the pheasant he had saved happened to hear him. It flew to Sangwonsa and struck its head against the bell three times, freeing the man but killing itself in the process.

After that “Jeogaksan” became Chiaksan — which means “Pheasant Peak Mountain” — to honor the pheasant’s sacrifice.

There are numerous artistic representations of this myth littered throughout Chiaksan, including a beautiful engraving on the bell at Sangwonsa.

If you visit Chiaksan this story should help you make sense of the apparent pheasant fetish.

• Guryeongsa Temple. Name means “nine dragons temple”. The story goes that Uisang, the monk who originally built the temple in 668 CE, first consulted with nine water dragons about where he should build. The nine dragons humbly suggested that Uisang build his temple over the pond in which they lived, and thus Guryeongsa Temple was born.
